Under administrative direction of the Director of Food and Nutrition Services, the 0922 Manager I , Clinical Nutrition Manager (CNM) provides oversight and management of the Clinical Nutrition Services at Zuckerberg San Francisco General to include the supervision of inpatient Clinical Dietitians and Dietetic Technicians. The CNM is responsible for setting the strategic initiatives of the Clinical Nutrition Program and ensuring the provision of high quality Medical Nutrition Therapy. The CNM has oversight of the day to day operations of the Clinical Nutrition Program.

Role description

The Clinical Nutrition Manager performs the following essential job functions:

  • Manages the nutrition care process through supervision of clinical dietitians, nutrition and dietetics technicians, including nutrition screening, assessment, diagnosis, intervention, monitoring and evaluation, education, and menu processing according to established departmental policies.
  • Assesses, designs, evaluates, and creates/updates nutrition care policies and procedures to comply with regulatory requirements. Establishes institution-specific nutrition practice guidelines; keeps abreast of new developments and implements new clinical practices as appropriate
  • Evaluates and maintains cost control procedures, adhering to budget constraints while ensuring quality service. Maintains and updates the Clinical Nutrition Staffing model to meet the demands of the operation; Assists in budget planning, projects revenue and productivity, and establishes financial targets and objectives.
  • Establish performance standards and competency review process for Dietitians and Dietetic Technicians; Manages, disciplines, and evaluates the performance of assigned department personnel based on job requirements and core competencies
  • Interacts with hospital administration, medical, nursing and allied health professional, and foodservice staff to promote interdisciplinary communication and cooperation and to ensure patients’ nutritional needs are met. Attends and participates in interdisciplinary teams and committees.
  • Oversight of Recruiting, interviewing, hiring, and training of new employees to meet department staffing needs
  • Serves as a mentor to facilitate professional growth and job satisfaction of employees; provides or facilitates continuing education and training opportunities for clinical nutrition staff; fosters an inclusive and equitable workplace and ensures care provided is inclusive and culturally relevant.
  • Develops, initiates, and monitors quality initiatives and patient safety practices in accordance with The Joint Commission and other accrediting organizations. Assists in achieving compliance with regulatory agency standards, including state and federal standards.
  • Creates and implements a strategic plan that positions dietitians and nutrition and dietetics technicians in key roles as providers of Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT), resulting in high-quality, high-value, culturally competent and cost-effective patient care.
  • Monitors and integrates technological advances that enhance efficiency as appropriate.
  • Oversight of the Dietetic Internship coordination
  • Mentors department staff in presenting and/or publishing articles, abstracts, or results of research studies in professional journals or at professional meetings.
  • Reviews current literature regularly to ensure the most recent advancements in nutrition care are incorporated into nutrition practices and protocols.
  • Develops and implements an individualized portfolio plan for professional growth and development, including participation in professional organizations and activities, workshops, seminars, and staff development programs.
  • Applies Scope of Practice, Standards of Excellence, Standards of Practice (SOP), and Standards of Professional Performance (SOPP) tools for credentialed nutrition and dietetics practitioners to determine competence, advance practice, and measure and evaluate an organization’s programs, services, and initiatives

The Clinical Nutrition Manager performs related duties as required.

How to qualify

Minimum Qualifications (required):

  • Experience: Requires five (5) years of clinical dietetic experience in a large hospital or similar institution; AND
  • License or certification: Requires possession of a current valid registration as a Registered Dietitian with the Commission on Dietetic Registration (the credentialing agency for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics)
  • Education: covered under license/certification - Registered Dietitian eligibility requirement- requires a BA/graduate level program.

Desirable Qualification: The stated desirable qualifications may be considered at the end of the selection process when candidates are referred for hiring:

  • Two (2) years of supervisory experience; direct supervision of Dietitians and Dietetic Technicians.
  • Experience with CBORD, EPIC;
  • Knowledge in critical care and NICU nutrition critical care, ambulatory specialty areas.

Note: One year of full-time employment is equivalent to 2000 hours. (2000 hours of qualifying work experience is based on a 40-hour work week.) Any overtime hours that you work above forty (40) hours per week are not included in the calculation to determine full-time employment.

Minimum Qualification Supplemental Questionnaire (Weight: Qualifying): Applicants will be required to complete a Minimum Qualification Supplemental Questionnaire by email after your submit your application. This MQSQ is designed to obtain specific information regarding an applicant's experience in relation to the Minimum Qualifications for this position. Applicants must also complete the official application. It is essential that applicants provide complete information identifying their education, experience, and training. The MQSQ will be used to evaluate if the applicant possesses the required minimum qualifications.

Supplemental Questionnaire Examination: (Weight = 100%): Qualified candidates will be sent a Supplemental Questionnaire (SQ) exam that must be completed by the set date. Candidates will be evaluated on their relative knowledge, skill and ability levels in job-related areas. A passing score must be achieved on the SQ in order to be placed/ranked on the Eligible List. Candidate responses on the Supplemental Questionnaire cannot be changed once submitted. Candidates will be placed in rank order according to their final score on the SQ. 

Supplemental Questionnaire will be evaluated in relations to the knowledge, skills and abilities required for this class which may include, but are not limited to: Knowledge and application of nutrition services and medical nutrition therapy in patients, especially in specialty areas; knowledge of electronic medical record, nutrient analysis, word processing, and spreadsheet software; Ability to develop, implement and monitor long-range business plans, strategies, budgets, and report; Ability to mediate and resolve complex problems and issues, provide leadership and influence others while fostering effective working relationships and building consensus; Ability to problem solve; oral and written communication

Eligible List: A confidential eligible list of applicant names that have passed the civil service examination process will be created, and used for certification purposes only. The duration of the eligible list resulting from this examination process will be of six (6) months, and may be extended with the approval of the Human Resources Program Director. The list will be used to fill current and future vacancies within the next six (6) months.

Certification: The certification rule for the eligible list resulting from this examination will be Rule of the List. Additional selection processes may be conducted by the hiring department prior to making final hiring decisions. The department may administer additional position-specific selection procedures to make final hiring decisions.
