The City and County of San Francisco’s Public Health and Safety Bond will fund various capital improvement projects for Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center (ZSFG) and the community health centers. The purpose is to provide better health care by making essential Information Technology (IT) infrastructure improvements, earthquake safety improvements on the campus, modernizing fire life safety response systems, and improving services in a 1970s-era campus facility that houses outpatient visits, urgent care, and the City’s only psychiatric emergency services.
Role description
Under administrative direction of ZSFG’s Senior Hospital Administrator for Planning and Facility Development, the 5502 Project Manager I will act as a Project Manager and a primary liaison between ZSFG’s Capital Projects office and staff/clinical programs, Facilities Services and engineering, and the Department of Public Works (DPW) Project Management and Contractors. The essential job functions include, but are not limited to:
- Planning, organizing, and directing work in support of ZSFG’s 2016 Bond slate of renovation projects within Building 5 (existing 1970s-era building);
- Managing small-to-medium sized projects in excess of $1,000,000;
- Assessing existing space on campus and impacts to building mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems;
- Reviewing design drawings and permits to coordinate construction, equipment installation, and occupancy; coordinating with multiple stakeholders, including facility services, IT, Electronic Health Records (EHR) Team, Capital Projects Office, IT, hospital leadership and clinical managers on decision-making and design.
- Lead the Seismic Upgrade of Building 5, design and construction of a new BSL3 Lab and other capital improvements and enabling efforts as required.
The 5502 Project Manager I performs other related duties as assigned/required.
How to qualify
1. Bachelor's Degree in architecture, engineering or planning; AND
1A. Four (4) years of responsible architectural, engineering or construction management experience; OR
2. Bachelor's Degree in another field; AND
2A. Six (6) years of responsible experience in a field directly related to the project; OR
3. Eight (8) years of architectural, engineering, or construction management experience in a field directly related to the project; OR
4. California registration as professional engineer or architect.
One year of full-time employment is equivalent to 2,000 hours (2,000 hours of qualifying work experience is based on a 40-hour work week). Any overtime hours that you work above 40 hours per week are not included in the calculation to determine full-time employment.

- Experienced Architect
- Experience working on California Department of Healthcare Access and Information (HCAI) (Formerly OSHPD) projects
- Knowledge of life-safety and occupancy requirements
- Knowledge of MEP systems
- Experience delivering major capital projects in urban locations with complex approval processes
- Excellent communication, verbal and written skills
- Ability to build team consensus among different stakeholders with various interests
- Knowledge of city contracting process

- Note on Electronic Health Record (EHR): The Department of Public Health (DPH) is implementing a unified Electronic Health Record (EHR) system and DPH employees must demonstrate competency in the use of the system that is appropriate for their classification as a condition of employment.
- Note on Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Some positions in the Department of Public Health will require the use of personal protective equipment (PPE), including but not limited to gloves, gowns, eye and face protection, and face-fitting respirators. The requirement for the use of PPE may come on short or no notice. Facial hair or any condition that interferes with a face-fitting respirator’s seal (i.e. comes between the sealing surfaces of the respirator and the wearer’s bare skin) is not permitted when face-fitting respirators are worn, including during initial or periodic respirator fit-testing. Employees who choose not to shave and do not have either American Disabilities Act (ADA) or Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) Accommodations do not have the right to alternate work assignments or the option of using a loose-fitting Powered Air Purifying Respirator (PAPR) in place of a FaceFitting Respirator.
