The Information Systems Trainee Program (ISTP) is a terrific opportunity to join our team of passionate, knowledgeable and innovative IT/IS professionals who will develop your skills with the SFPW IT bureau. Individuals selected to join this two-year program will receive a valuable combination of technical training and on-the-job experience under the mentorship of professional staff in the SFPW Information Technology bureau.
Information Technology
As ISTP participants, you will develop your skills and knowledge through working with three separate teams within our IT bureau: The Mobile Device Management Program (MDM), IT Applications and Service Desk.
The Mobile Device Management Program (MDM):
The Mobile Device Management Program (MDM) is part of the Workplace Services Team that is in charge of mobile device deployment and support for the IT department. We will administer and manage the lifecycle of City mobile devices including provisioning, inventory management, and decommissioning in accordance with City guidelines, and the department's telecom accounts.
IT Applications:
IT Applications Team consists of business analysts, application developers, and project and product managers. We work with off-the-shelf solutions as well as in-house developed applications ranging from the up-and-coming Project and Construction Management software and the newly developed Commission Agenda Item Calendaring system. The IT application team primarily utilizes .Net technology stack and are migrating into more Azure cloud technologies; in addition, we are looking towards the future in implementing newer technologies.
Service Desk:
The Service Desk team will provide first-level desktop, software, and email support to customers. Keep customers informed and updated on the status of problems and requests; define and document Service Desk solutions, processes, and procedures; inform management and clients of severe problems; work with local site engineers and desktop administrators to resolve problems and implement service requests; perform email and application administration support duties; provide prompt, professional, courteous and outstanding customer service on a daily basis to all customers.
Appointment Type: Temporary-Exempt (TEX), Category 18. This position is excluded by the Charter from the competitive Civil Service examination process and shall serve at the discretion of the Appointing Officer and not exceed 36 months.

Role description
Major, Important and Essential Duties
Your duties as an ISTP participant may include, but are not limited to, the following:
The Mobile Device Management Program (MDM) Team:
- Participate in managing the department's Mobile Device Management system (MDM).
- Configure and troubleshoot mobile devices including but not limited to iOS and Android smartphones and tablets, and mobile devices for mobile apps, VPN, and AD authentication.
- Implement and maintain best standards for mobile device security management.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
IT Applications Team:
- Participate in the development of new applications; may test software to ensure compatibility.
- Assist in the design of new and/or revised systems and programs, and in the coordination of integration into existing systems and procedures.
- May perform testing necessary to debug new and revised programs.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Service Desk Team:
- Perform help desk functions for routine issues including problem tracking, analysis, and resolution, define and document help desk solutions, analyze and resolve system problems to ensure continuous system operations required for scheduled data processing functions.
- Provide technical and operational support and maintenance for computers and networks, assist in network upgrades, log, track and monitor all problems and requests.
- May assign logons and rights, print queues and directory structures, reset passwords, create departmental groups and run security programs.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Notes: The position may require sufficient physical strength and coordination for lifting, pushing, pulling and/or carrying the weight of computer systems equipment. The position may also require the following: bending, stooping and/or crawling to install or repair computer systems hardware, hand/eye coordination and manual dexterity for taking apart casings, installing parts and reconnecting computer systems hardware. Depending on location the incumbent may be exposed to or affected by extensive VDT exposure.
How to qualify
Minimum Qualifications:
There are no minimum qualifications for this classification. Open to anyone who is interested in entering in the IT (Information Technology) Field.
Desirable Qualifications: The stated desirable qualifications may be used to identify job finalists at the end of the selection process when candidates are referred for hiring.
- Possession of a certificate in Information Technology from an accredited college, university, vocational training program, community or technical college, ANSI accredited certifier (i.e. CompTIA), or vendor (i.e. Microsoft or Cisco).
- Training in object-oriented programming, data structure and database. Preferably with REST API and HTTP protocol knowledge.
- Technical Skills/Experience in the following areas: Project Management, Application Support, Mobile Device. Management, End User Training, Cyber Security, Net Core MVC, Entity framework, C#, Azure Cloud, T-SQL, JavaScript, jQuery, HTML, Bootstrap, CSS, and Git etc.
- Flexibility to work independently and as a member of a team.
- Communicate effectively with technical and management personnel.
- Willingness to step in and contribute.

Selection Procedures:
