The Building Design and Construction Division

The Building Design and Construction Division of San Francisco Public Works, led by the City Architect, provides architectural and landscape design services, comprehensive building planning, project and construction management, contract support and compliance monitoring, materials testing and hazardous materials investigation for the development of new – and the upgrading of existing ­– civic buildings, facilities, and urban landscapes to create a more resilient city.

Appointment Type: Temporary Provisional (TPV) This is not a permanent appointment. A provisional appointee must participate and be successful in a Civil Service examination for this classification and be selected through an open competitive process in order to be considered for permanent appointment. Provisional appointments may not exceed three (3) years.

Role description

Working with the guidance and direction of general supervision, you will perform landscape architectural duties relating to the planning and development of landscape improvement projects for City parks, recreational areas, urban public spaces, parkways, public rights of way, and other lands on City-owned facilities. Your role will contribute to the preparation of preliminary and final construction documents with related specifications by hand and using AutoCAD. This will include conceptual plan studies, presentation graphics, 3D modeling and perspective renderings, freehand sketches, base map preparation, construction details, and related calculations and computations. 

EXAMPLES OF IMPORTANT AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
The duties specified below represent a range of duties and responsibilities of a Landscape Architectural Associate I, these include but are not limited to the following:

  • Prepares, supervises, or assists in preparing drawings for various landscape architectural projects, including conceptual plan studies, presentation graphics, freehand sketches, base map preparation, construction details, construction documents, specifications, and cost estimates.
  • You will conduct field investigations by visiting project sites to evaluate existing conditions. Field investigations may include inventories of existing landscaping and improvements; some field measurements; identifying constraints and opportunities for development.
  • Prepares, supervises, or assists in calculations and computations necessary for the preparation of conceptual, preliminary, and final construction drawings and specifications.
  • Assisting senior-level personnel to perform all tasks required in the Landscape Architecture Section, including the preparation of written reports, meeting minutes, memoranda, and correspondence; coordination of departmental and agency conferences; development of subordinates through training and supervision; and making public presentations.
  • Prepares, supervises, or assists in presentations to community stakeholders to ensure City projects meet community program and equity goals.
  • You will assist in coordinating with other design and engineering disciplines.
  • Perform inspections of landscape projects, under construction, to ensure quality and conformance to plans and specifications.
  • Driving a department vehicle safely and responsibly to designated sites to perform inspections and field investigations.
  • May include additional duties as assigned.

How to qualify

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:
Possession of a Baccalaureate degree in Landscape Architecture from an accredited college or university.

Experience:
Four (4) years of progressively responsible experience in the landscape architectural field including landscape architectural design, landscape architectural detailing, construction documents, programming, preliminary cost budgeting, specification coordination and review, construction administration, and field observation of landscape architectural construction projects, all under the direction of a licensed landscape architect.

License and Certification: 
Possession of a valid California driver license.

Substitution:
A professional degree in Architecture/Landscape Architecture (Bachelor of Architecture/Landscape Architecture or Master of Architecture/Landscape Architecture) from an accredited college or university may substitute for the required education.

Desirable Qualifications: (The stated desirable qualifications may be used to identify job finalists at the end of the selection process when candidates are referred for hiring.)

  • Ability to use electronic architectural/landscape architectural drafting programs including AutoCad or Civil 3D.
  • Ability to use 3D modeling and rendering software including Sketch-up, Rhino, Lumion, Enscape, and Adobe Suite.
  • Experience in projects of medium complexity in detailing and coordination with multiple disciplines.
  • Knowledge of native and adapted plant palettes.
  • Exceptional design and representational abilities.
  • Shows leadership potential in the field of Landscape Architecture.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with ease.
  • Desire and ability to mentor junior staff.
