Established in 1980 by the Airport Commission, SFO Museum’s mission is to delight, engage, and inspire a global audience with programming on a broad range of subjects; to collect, preserve, interpret, and share the history of commercial aviation; and to enrich the public experience at San Francisco International Airport. The Museum has been accredited by the American Alliance of Museums since 1999 and retains the distinction of being the only accredited museum in an airport. The Museum operates more than twenty-five sites throughout the Airport terminals, including fourteen galleries that exhibit a rotating schedule of art, history, photography, science, and cultural exhibitions. Among the sites is the San Francisco Airport Commission Aviation Library and Louis A. Turpen Aviation Museum, which houses a permanent collection of more than 150,000 objects related to the history of commercial aviation. Role description

The Exhibition Production & Installation Supervisor engages the audiences of San Francisco International Airport by creating exceptional exhibitions. Supervising and working within a team of full- and part-time preparators, the position is responsible for the preparation, installation, and deinstallation of more than 25 annual exhibitions and special projects within the Airport’s terminals and provides assistance with the maintenance of SFO Museum’s Aviation Collection and the Airport’s Public Art Collection.

The position reports to the Director & Chief Curator, and supervises a team of Senior Museum Preparators and on-call Museum Preparators. The position works with all levels of Museum staff, regularly partners with Airport staff, and communicates with outside individuals and organizations.

The essential functions of this classification include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Plan and oversee the preparation of more than 25 exhibitions annually in public spaces throughout the Airport’s terminals; maintain adherence to established production benchmarks and deadlines; provide direct supervision to all preparators; assign exhibition lead roles.
  • Plan and oversee the installation and deinstallation of more than 25 exhibitions annually in public spaces throughout the Airport’s terminals; directly supervise or otherwise assign leadership role for installation and deinstallation activities; lead meetings to confirm activities, schedule, and respective assignments; maintain adherence to established exhibition dates.
  • Prepare and maintain a three-month advance production schedule for preparation work on all exhibitions.
  • Partner with Exhibition Designer and Head of Special Projects & Site Planning to assure that Museum work practices and standards are upheld; consult with both in timely fashion when production does not comport with communicated instructions or expectations.
  • Maintain team compliance with all established art handling practices; observe guidance and/or direction offered by Conservator regarding specific handling concerns; intervene if observing any object in jeopardy.
  • Provide support to the Registration department in the packing, unpacking, and transportation of objects to and from Museum facilities.
  • Provide support to the Collections department in the movement or maintenance of objects within the Aviation Collection.
  • Supervise team of full- and part-time preparators; lead the recruitment, evaluation, hiring of all new preparators; regularly review incoming applications for open positions; schedule on-call preparators and maintain attention to hourly thresholds.
  • Partner with Exhibition Designer and Head of Special Projects & Site Planning on annual review/revision of onboarding packet.
  • Prepare, revise, and maintain documentation of job safety protocols (JSPs) in collaboration with Safety Officer and Head of Special Projects & Site Planning for all shop equipment prior to training and use by colleagues;
  • Partner with Head of Special Projects & Site Planning and Safety Officer to monitor biweekly assessments and documentation of function and safety for all stationary equipment and portable power tools; immediately lock out any equipment identified as potential health or safety hazard; repair or replace any deficient equipment; serve as primary signatory to repaired tools returning to service.
  • Ensure that materials and supplies are available in advance of production needs in partnership with colleagues overseeing purchasing.
  • Oversee the bi-weekly restocking of exhibition brochures throughout the Airport terminals.
  • Stay informed of new developments and initiatives throughout the museum sector.
  • Other related duties, as-assigned.

How to qualify

Education:

Possession of a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in the fine arts, art history, decorative arts, design, history, library science, museum studies, natural history, science, technology, or other closely related disciplines.

Experience:

Five (5) years of museum experience.

Applicants must meet the minimum qualification requirement by the final filing date unless otherwise noted.

One year full-time employment is equivalent to 2,000 hours (2,000 hours of qualifying work experience is based on a 40 hour work week). Any overtime hours that you work above 40 hours per week are not included in the calculation to determine full-time employment.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Three (3) years of supervisory experience;
  • Excellent interpersonal and team-oriented skills, including the ability to establish and maintain positive, effective working relationships with volunteers, assistants, supervisor, Museum and Airport staff, outside agencies, and the public;
  • Familiarity with materials utilized in the production of exhibition mounts, mannequins, and furniture, such as: MDF, plywood, Plexiglas, brass, steel, FOSSSHAPE, and paint;
  • Familiarity with the tools, equipment, and techniques utilized in the production of exhibition mounts, mannequins, and furniture, such as: power- and hand-tools, brazing, and MIG/TIG welding;
  • Ability to plan, organize, implement multiple simultaneous and complex projects.

Transportation Security Administration (TSA) Security Clearance:
Candidates for employment with the San Francisco Airport Commission are required to undergo a criminal history record check, including FBI fingerprints, and Security Threat Assessment in order to determine eligibility for security clearance and may be required to undergo drug/alcohol screening. Per Civil Service Commission Rule Section 110.9.1, every applicant for an examination must possess and maintain the qualifications required by law and by the examination announcement for the examination. Failure to obtain and maintain security clearance may be basis for termination from employment with the Airport Commission.
