San Francisco Public Works currently has a vacancy for the position of Plumber (7347) within our Building Repair Unit.
Building Repair
We provide quality professional construction, repair, and remodeling for City-owned facilities. Our teams also provide emergency-repair services around the clock, ensuring that police, fire, and other public safety operations are always fully functional.
Appointment Type: Permanent-Exempt (PEX), Category 18. This position is excluded by the Charter from the competitive Civil Service examination process and shall serve at the discretion of the Appointing Officer and not exceed 36 months.

Role description
Under general supervision, as a Plumber, you will perform skilled plumbing work in the alteration, repair and maintenance of water, sewer, and other plumbing systems.
Important and Essential Duties:
As a Plumber, your duties may include but are not limited to the following:
- Perform plumbing duties in connection with a wide variety of building alterations, maintenance and repair projects, and other appurtenant and miscellaneous structures.
- Install, alter, replace, and repair plumbing such as water, sewage, and drainage systems.
- Cut, bend, assemble, and install various pipes, fittings, and fixtures for water, sanitary, drainage, heating, gas, and other plumbing systems which involve the performance of hand, bench, and maintenance plumbing tasks.
- Install, alter, repair, or replace all plumbing fixtures.
- Thread, ream, assemble, caulk, solder, and weld various pipes and component parts.
- Install, alter, and repair valves, fittings, and other plumbing parts and equipment, including such items as hot water boilers, sterilizers, steam tables, sinks, thermal control apparatus, sprinkler heads, hydrants, and service pipes.
- Repair and install new water/drainage lines and waste/sewage pipes.
- Check plumbing fixtures for leaks and other defects, opening and cleaning clogged drains, pipes, and traps.
- Advise on selecting, ordering, and storing plumbing supplies and equipment.
- Maintain working records and reports.
How to qualify
Minimum Qualifications:
Education:
Completion of high school.
AND,
Completion of a recognized five (5) year Apprenticeship in the craft.
AND,
Experience:
Three (3) years of experience as a journeyman plumber.
AND,
License and Certification:
Possession of a valid California driver’s license.
Substitution:
Additional qualifying journey-level experience may be substituted for the required plumbing apprenticeship on a year-for-year basis.
Notes:
- One-year full-time employment is considered equivalent to 2000 hours (2000 hours of qualifying work experience is based on a 40 hour work week). Any overtime hours that you work above forty (40) hours per week are not included in the calculation to determine full-time employment.

The MQSQ will be used to evaluate if the applicant possesses the required minimum qualifications.
