Public Works currently has a vacancy for the role of Asphalt Worker (7502) within our Street and Sewer Repair team.
Operations Division
The Operations Division delivers essential services around the clock with street cleaning, street and sewer repair and maintenance, and repair services for civic buildings and structures. Operations staff also provides graffiti removal, sidewalk maintenance, community partnerships to advance cleaning and greening initiatives, code enforcement, workforce development and apprenticeship programs, urban forestry care and tree planting, and landscape services.
Street and Sewer Repair
Oversees paving and street repair work, sewer repair, patch paving and pothole fixes; installation of traffic control devices (speed humps, raised crosswalks, speed tables); installation/modification to catch basins, manholes and culverts; grinding and paving for installation of ADA curb ramps; ongoing sand clearing from Great Highway roadway and promenade – all with the goal of creating a safer and more resilient city.
The nature of the work requires sustained physical effort involving considerable standing and bending, use of hand and pneumatic tools, lifting objects weighing up to 90 pounds, exposure to hot asphaltic mixtures, disagreeable weather conditions, and working conditions where moderately serious injuries may occur.
Role description
Under general direction, you will use Asphaltic material and other road resurfacing applications in connection with street maintenance and repair projects.
Important and Essential Duties:
As an Asphalt Worker, your duties may include but are not limited to the following:
- Remove old pavement and prepare surfaces for repaving including the use of pneumatic tools.
- Prepare surfaces for Asphaltic mixture by "painting".
- Shovel, rake, spread hot Asphaltic material in the repair or resurfacing of streets.
- Compact and smooth Asphaltic patches by rolling.
- Operate Asphalt kettle and / or automatic emulsion spray rake and tool heater.
- Place and remove barricades and clean up job sites upon completion of work.
How to qualify
Minimum Qualifications:
Experience:
One (1) year of verifiable experience in construction and / or street paving and repair work as an Asphalt worker; And
License:
Possession of a valid driver license at the time of hire.
Note(s):
- One-year full-time employment is considered equivalent to 2000 hours (2000 hours of qualifying work experience is based on a 40 hour work week). Any overtime hours that you work above forty (40) hours per week are not included in the calculation to determine full-time employment.
- A valid out-of-state driver’s license is acceptable during the application process. A valid California driver's license must be obtained prior to appointment and maintained throughout employment.
