About:

The San Francisco Department of Public Health (DPH) has multiple vacancies for permanent, full-time Disease Control Investigator positions among its various divisions. Rather than publishing separate job ads for each position, this job ad collects applications for all of them. Applicants who pass the exam will be contacted about current and future positions for a year.

Under direction, the 2806 Disease Control Investigator investigates individual cases and outbreaks of communicable and other diseases, operating in the office and the field; collects, interprets, and records complex specialized information of a highly confidential nature about patients and their contacts; and investigates conditions at outbreak sites, such as schools and health care facilities, to formulate recommendations for disease prevention and control.

Role description

Nature of Work
Requires sustained physical effort involving continuous light work, potentially including considerable walking with frequent exposure to health, accident, and injury hazards and disagreeable elements

Duties Include

  • Conducts field and telephone interviews and investigations with selected communicable and other disease patients and identified contacts; obtains their confidence and cooperation; attempts to ascertain the identity of all contacts
  • Investigates reports from several reporting agencies and sources; collects and reviews pertinent health information from medical providers, clinics, hospitals, laboratories, and patients in order to formulate appropriate recommendations for follow-up based on existing local, state, and federal protocols
  • Makes inquiries in order to secure information relative to the identification and location of contacts; devises methods of obtaining information in the field; applies interpersonal skills in tactfully handling situations
  • Applies knowledge of applicable state and local laws, public health regulations, and various provisions of the state health and safety code governing communicable and other diseases; applies working knowledge of medical terms and technology to enable discussion and explanation of communicable and other disease complications with professional and lay people; may serve isolation orders
  • Communicates with appropriate authorities at state, federal, and local health departments to refer cases and contacts with a history of exposure or plans for travel in other jurisdictions
  • Admits patients and contacts to clinics and initiates their medical record; answers inquiries about clinic procedures during the time patients may be under observation
  • Promotes general understanding of the disease control program; appears and discusses program measures before trade and civic groups and other organizations gives communicable and other disease education, including information regarding repeated infections and means to avoid subsequent infections and transmission to others
  • Maintains various records of individual patients and contacts and reports of investigations; keeps accurate records of disease investigations using designated forms, spreadsheets, and databases.

How to qualify

  • Education
    • Possession of a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university
  • Experience
    • Six months* of experience within the last five years either
      • conducting interviews or investigations in the field of epidemiology,
        OR
      • as an investigator conducting field investigations dealing with the general public in a specialized public health or sanitation field in connection with disease control programs.
  • Substitution
    • Additional experience as described above may substitute for the required degree on a year-for-year basis (up to a maximum of 2 years).
      • Thirty (30) semester units or forty-five (45) quarter units equal one year.

*One year of full-time employment is equivalent to 2,000 hours of work experience (2,000 hours of qualifying work experience is based on a 40-hour work week). Any overtime hours that you work above 40 hours a week are not included in the calculation to determine full-time employment

Selection Procedures

Required Questionnaire

Behavioral Consistency Questionnaire Exam (Weight: 100%)
After the job ad unpublishes, qualifiied candidates will receive a link to the exam. Candidates must achieve a passing score on the exam to continue in the selection process and to be placed on the confidential eligible list in rank order according to their final score.

Additional selection processes may be conducted by the hiring department prior to making final hiring decisions.

Certification
The certification rule for the eligible list resulting from this examination will be the Rule of 3 Scores.

Once you pass the exam, you will be placed on an eligible list and given a score and a rank.
