About Supervisor Mandelman
Supervisor Mandelman represents District 8 on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. District 8 includes the Castro, Glen Park, Noe Valley, Diamond Heights, Mission Dolores, and Cole Valley. Supervisor Mandelman is one of the LGBTQ members of the Board of Supervisors, and throughout his first term, was one of the only LGBTQ Supervisors in Northern California.

He currently serves as Vice-Chair of the Budget & Finance Committee. He serves as Chair of the San Francisco County Transportation Authority and represents San Francisco as a member of the Executive Board of the Association of Bay Area Governments and as Vice-Chair of the Transbay Joint Powers Authority Board of Directors.

Role description

Position Description:

The Office of San Francisco Supervisor Rafael Mandelman seeks a Legislative Assistant to perform a wide variety of legislative, constituent, and administrative duties. Each Supervisor may employ up to four full-time Legislative Assistants. Office staff is supplemented with volunteers and interns, who are managed by the Legislative Assistants.

The Legislative Assistant will have a unique opportunity to join Supervisor Mandelman’s team to make substantive contributions to the development of policies that shape the City and County of San Francisco. The work environment is fast-paced and dynamic, and Legislative Assistants are expected to be well-organized, detail oriented, and available to work flexible hours.

The essential duties of this position include:

Legislative

  • Advise, research, and prepare briefs, reports and talking points for the Supervisor on political and policy issues before the Board of Supervisors.
  • Work with the Supervisor, other elected officials, the City Attorney’s Office, City Departments, advocates, and interest groups to draft and pass legislation.

Constituent

  • Connect residents and merchants with relevant resources, convene neighborhood meetings, maintain strong relationships with neighborhood and community stakeholders and mediate neighborhood conflicts.
  • Represent the Supervisor at community meetings and events.

Administrative

  • Screen and respond to calls, emails, and inquiries, prepare correspondence, monitor meetings.
  • Draft press releases, statements, speeches, neighborhood news columns and op-eds.
  • Contribute to office’s online communications platforms including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and email newsletters.
  • Manage team of policy and administrative volunteers.

 

How to qualify

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or significant commensurate (year-for-year) work experience AND
  • Minimum of two years of professional experience, preferably in a public or community-based agency.

Substitution
Additional experience as described above may be substituted for the required degree on a year-for-year basis. Thirty (30) semester units or forty-five (45) quarter units equal one year.

Desirable Qualifications

The following desirable qualifications may be considered at the final selection process when candidates are referred for hiring:

  • Graduate degree in public policy, law, business, or related field.
  • Experience working in local government.
  • Knowledgeable about San Francisco—issues, people, politics, places.
  • Smart, motivated, articulate, diplomatic, politically savvy.
  • Excellent writing skills.
  • High-level interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with a wide range of people including constituents, community activists, city staff and press.
  • Strong public speaking ability.
  • Volunteer or team management skills to create high performing, professional, inviting office environment.
  • Well-organized, detail-oriented, and available to work flexible hours.

Selection Procedures
