The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) connects San Franciscans with their communities to enhance the economy, environment and, ultimately, the quality of life in the city. As an agency within the City and County of San Francisco, the SFMTA is responsible for managing the city’s transportation network. The agency has more than 6,000 employees who are responsible for the management of all ground and some underground transportation in the city. Role description

The internship is open to students who will be returning to school in Fall 2024 or who will have graduated within 6 months of Spring 2024. Students enrolled in second-to-last or last semester and will soon graduate are also encouraged to apply. Applicants must be pursuing a degree in Aerospace Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Traffic Engineering or Transportation Engineering. The 5381 classification is open to applicants with prior engineering or relevant internship experience or who are pursuing a master’s degree or higher in a related field.

The internship program offers weekly seminars and field trips for interns to learn about various parts of the Agency. Attendance is mandatory at these events. Interns will also participate in Pecha Kucha presentations at the end of the summer.

This role is exempt from the San Francisco Civil Service Rules, and employment is at the discretion of the appointing officer. The internship follows a 40-hour workweek, generally between the hours of 8 AM and 5 PM, Monday to Friday. Work outside these hours may be required for fieldwork, outreach events, etc. Interns may be eligible for a flexible work schedule, subject to supervisor and division approval. Interns may work up to 1,040 hours in a fiscal year. Most intern positions will terminate at the end of summer; depending on the nature of the work, some positions may be eligible to continue into the school year, subject to supervisor and division approval.

Work Schedule
We work in a hybrid and traditional environment, and you may be expected to work onsite in the office up to 5 days per week. In-office workdays are determined by the nature of the work and scheduled by your supervisor.

Intern positions are available in the following Divisions and Sections:

Streets Division:

Engineering interns within the Street Division are responsible for developing design alternatives for transportation projects; performing field visits; preparing traffic control device work orders; drafting in AutoCAD; preparing striping drawings for official records; estimating project costs for traffic striping, signage, signal, and civil work scope; analyzing signal timing; reviewing construction work zones and site plans; supporting public outreach; and preparing legislation. Responsibilities will vary depending on the team.

Engineering teams within the Streets Division include:

  • Traffic Routing
  • Operations
  • Livable Streets
  • Transit Engineering
  • Street Use, Development, and Signals (SUDS)

Transit Division:

Engineering interns within the Transit Division are responsible for supporting the evaluation of the E-bus pilot program, participates in design review, project planning and engineering maintenance support for electrical distribution utility or be a part of the team that supports the Cable Car systems, storage tank systems, elevator/escalator systems and a variety of other transportation infrastructure. The specific responsibilities will vary depending on the team assigned.

Engineering teams within the Transit Division include:

  • Program Delivery and Support – Fleet Engineering
  • Maintenance of Way – Mechanical Systems Program
  • Maintenance of Way – Traction Power Group
  • Maintenance of Way – Maintenance Engineering

How to qualify

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: At the time of submitting application, you must be enrolled in an accredited university or a community college pursuing a degree in one of the following fields:  Aerospace Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Traffic Engineering or Transportation Engineering. 

  • You must be returning to your associate, undergraduate or graduate program or entering/continuing a graduate program in the Fall 2024
  • Students enrolled in second-to-last or last semester and will soon graduate are also encouraged to apply.

Experience: No previous experience is necessary for individuals pursuing a master's degree or higher in a qualifying field. However, previous internship experience may be used to determine the possible level of classification into which you are hired.  For undergraduate candidates, prior engineering or relevant internship experience is required to compete for positions at the 5381 level.

Desired Qualifications

The stated desirable qualifications may be used to identify candidates advancing to the interview process and/or to identify job finalist(s) at the end of the selection process when referred for hiring.

  • Interest in public service and understanding of impact of work on the diverse community in San Francisco.
  • Applied knowledge of Microsoft Office, ArcGIS, AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Adobe Creative Suite, and other software
  • Ability to convey messages effectively.
  • Ability to work collaboratively such as participation in club, team sport, or organization.
