The Mission of the San Francisco Department of Public Health (SFDPH) is to protect and promote the health of all San Franciscans. SFDPH strives to achieve its mission through the work of two main Divisions - the San Francisco Health Network and Population Health. The San Francisco Health Network is the City’s only complete system of care and has locations throughout the City, including Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center, Laguna Honda Hospital and Rehabilitation Center, and over 15 primary care health centers.

The current position available is with Medical Surgical Care. However, the list resulting from this recruitment may be used to fill Nurse Manager (Medical Surgical Care) positions for the next six months.

Role description

Under general supervision, the Nurse Manager (Medical Surgical Care) supervises the delivery and evaluation of nursing care and the care environment.

Essential Duties

The Nurse Manager (Medical Surgical Care) performs the following essential job functions:

  • Manages nursing care in an assigned area, which may either be in a clinical, administrative or community setting;
  • Assesses patient care needs;
  • Supervises, evaluates, mentors, and coaches assigned nursing/non-clinical staff;
  • Works with Human Resources on hiring, onboarding new staff;
  • Develops programs to support staff education and quality improvement in assigned area;
  • Maintains accurate records and prepares written reports;
  • Serves on committees as assigned or as needed;
  • Manages units budget in a fiscally responsible manner; AND
  • Promotes effective verbal and written communication.

The 2322 Nurse Manager (Medical Surgical Care) performs other related duties as required.

How to qualify

Minimum Qualifications

  1. LICENSE: Possession of a valid, including temporary or interim, California Registered Nurse License issued by the Board of Registered Nursing (BRN); AND
  2. EDUCATION: Possession of a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and/or university in Nursing, Nursing Administration, or a closely related field; AND
  3. EXPERIENCE: Two (2) years (equivalent to 4,000 hours) of experience as a Registered Nurse in a general acute care hospital in a medical or surgical acute care unit, within the last five (5) years.

SUBSTITUTION: Two (2) years of additional experience as an Assistant Nurse Manager/Charge Nurse in a general acute care hospital (a hospital which provides 24-hour inpatient care, including the following basic services: Medical, Nursing, Surgical, Anesthesia, Laboratory, Radiology, Pharmacy and Dietary Services) may be substituted for the educational requirement. One (1) year (2,000 hours) of work experience is equivalent to 30 Semester Credits or 45 Quarter Credits.

Applicants must meet the minimum qualification requirement by the final filing date unless otherwise noted.

One-year fulltime employment is equivalent to 2,000 hours (2,000 hours of qualifying work experience is based on a 40-hour work week). Any overtime hours that you work above 40 hours per week are not included in the calculation to determine fulltime employment.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS: The stated desirable qualifications may be considered at the end of the selection process when candidates are referred for hiring.

The following desirable qualifications are applicable to positions in these units/areas:

Inpatient Medical-Surgical Units at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center (ZSFG)

  • RN or Nurse Manager experience at a Level 1 Trauma Center with trauma, stroke, and traumatic brain injury programs
  • Experience working in a safety net hospital

Selection Procedures
After application submission, candidates deemed qualified must complete all subsequent steps to advance in this selection process, which includes the following.

Minimum Qualification Supplemental Questionnaire (MQSQ): Candidates will be required to complete an MQSQ as part of the employment application. This MQSQ is designed to obtain specific information regarding an applicant's experience in relation to the Minimum Qualifications (MQ) for this position. The MQSQ will be used to evaluate if the applicant possesses the required minimum qualifications. Please provide proof of your licenses by uploading them to your application.

Training and Experience Evaluation/Supplemental Questionnaire (SQ) (Weight:100%): The SQ will be sent to those qualified candidates who demonstrate they meet the minimum qualifications. Candidates will be required to submit the completed SQ in the timeframe indicated and responses on the SQ cannot be changed once submitted. A passing score must be achieved on the SQ in order to be placed/ranked on the Eligible List. Candidates will be placed in rank order according to their final score on the SQ. After the confidential eligible list/score report is adopted, the department may administer additional selection procedures to make a final hiring decision. The SQ is designed to measure knowledge, skills and/or abilities in job-related areas that have been identified as critical for satisfactory performance in this position. All relevant experience, education and/or training must be included in the application to be reviewed during the scoring process. The department may administer additional position-specific selection procedures to make final hiring decisions.

Certification
The certification rule for the eligible list resulting from this examination will be the Rule of Ten Scores.
