The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) Technology section strives to be a premier provider of technical services enabling the SFMTA to be the premier transportation agency in the country. The Data Services team is responsible for processing and structuring data for analytics and reporting as well as maintaining cloud-based and on-premise data infrastructure.

POSITION DESCRIPTION:

The Analytics/BI Engineer will implement and manage a semantic layer atop our Synapse/Azure Data Lake warehouse in the form of Power BI datasets. They will play a key role in multifaceted teams consisting of data engineers, transportation planners, financial analysts, project managers and others. The work will span a wide range of areas including location based tracking and spatial analytics, asset management, and our real-time customer information system which is used to guide passengers to their destinations via multiple modes of transportation.  Over time, you will become a subject matter expert in multiple lines of business for the SFMTA. 

The Analytics/BI Engineer will help ensure data in the lake and Synapse pools are properly structured, optimized, and secured to support analytics in our Power BI environment. Additionally, they will build out, manage, and maintain our semantic layer (i.e., Power BI workspaces and datasets/models).

EXAMPLES AND IMPORTANT AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Leads build-out of semantic layer.
  • Works with business units to develop agency-wide best practices for modeling data.
  • Ensures datasets are available and reports are performant.
  • Supports general data management and governance efforts.
  • Leads Power BI related knowledge share efforts via brown bags, presentations, and office-hour sessions.
  • Collaborates with business units to define and refine KPIs, metrics, and measures.
  • Other job duties and responsibilities as assigned.

How to qualify

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

1. An associate degree in computer science or a closely related field from an accredited college or university OR its equivalent in terms of total course credits/units [i.e., at least sixty (60) semester or ninety (90) quarter credits/units with a minimum of twenty (20) semester or thirty (30) quarter credits/units in computer science or a closely-related field]; AND

2. Three (3) years of professional data analytics experience including modeling, processing, OR structuring data to support analysis and reporting.

Substitution:

Additional experience as described above may be substituted for the required degree on a year-for-year basis (up to a maximum of two (2) years). One (1) year is equivalent to thirty (30) semester units/ forty-five (45) quarter units with a minimum of 10 semester / 15 quarter units in computer science or a closely related field.

DESIRABLE QUAIFICATIONS:

The stated desirable qualifications may be used to identify job finalists at the end of the selection process when candidates are referred for hiring. 

  • Experience working with Spatial data.
  • Ability to create and manage data pipelines using at least one technology (e.g., Databricks, Airflow, Data Factory, Talend, etc.).
  • Experience with data related services including Synapse, Azure Data Lake, Data Explorer, Fabric, One Lake, Purview, or Cosmos. Familiarity with Transportation related data operations.
  • Experience with Python, Julia, Java, or equivalent language.
  • Experience working with SQL.
  • Experience with Power BI modeling.
  • Ability to create complex measures and columns using both DAX and Power Query.
  • Data warehouse related skills (e.g., understands star schemas, slowly changing dimensions, etc.).
  • Comfortable working with relational database systems such as SQL Server, Oracle, or PostgreSQL databases or SQL Server.
  • Familiarity with Azure or other cloud platforms (e.g., Amazon AWS, Google Cloud, etc.).
