About Committee on Information Technology Division  

The Committee on Information Technology (COIT) is a division under the City Administrator with the City Administrator currently serving as the Chair of the committee. As San Francisco's technology governance and policy making body, COIT provides a forum for City leadership to coordinate and collaborate to make citywide technology decisions. Through regular public meetings, COIT is also a vehicle to share with residents and the public the state of technology in the City. In addition to managing COIT as a policy body, COIT staff work with departments and policymakers to help transform local government services by supporting modern technologies and the adoption of user-centered design. Role description

Our Committee on Information Technology division has a Tech Policy internship position for candidates interested in driving change with a dynamic team via cross-departmental collaboration. Under direct supervision, the 9922 Public Service Aide, Associate to Professionals performs a variety of duties requiring a high level of responsibility; researches and analyzes data; assists in the implementation of departmental initiatives; and assists in various administrative duties. 

Interns will gain on-the-job experience under the guidance of experienced professionals while participating in various activities in the assigned City department.  

Essential Duties 

  • Conduct research on technology policy issues, legislation, and regulations within local government  

  • Analyze data and gather information to support team decision-making  

  • Assist in collecting policy proposals, reports, and briefing materials 

  • Conduct landscape analysis of departmental technology infrastructure and current technology practices  

  • Support meetings and discussions with departmental stakeholders 

  • Support internal and external communications strategy development and implementation 

  • Provide general administrative support to the team as needed 

How to qualify

  • Team player who feels comfortable in a collaborative and cross-departmental working space 
  • Effective interpersonal and communications skills with diverse stakeholders 

  • Highly organized and feels comfortable with both independent work and projects with direct oversight 

  • Familiarity with Microsoft Suite 

Education  

The team is looking for current college juniors, seniors, graduate students, or recent graduates. 

Experience 

No previous experience required. Candidates interested in public policy, public administration, privacy, data analytics, computer science, or civic tech may find more professional alignment with the work associated with this position. 

Additional Requirements: 

  • Candidates must be prepared to receive on-the-job training to acquire the ability to apply professional standards and skills as they relate to information technology.

Hybrid work culture  
We work in a hybrid environment, and you will be expected to work in the office up to 2-3 days per week. In-office workdays are flexible and can be tailored to fit your needs as well as the needs of the role/division. 

Exempt employment  
This role is exempt from the San Francisco Civil Service Rules, and employment is at the discretion of the appointing officer for a period of not-to-exceed three years. (Category 18)
