About County Clerk Division  

The Office of the County Clerk is responsible for safeguarding the integrity and providing access to certain public documents. The broad category of services includes marriage services, birth and death records, business and notary services, professional registrations, environmental services, and administering the San Francisco City ID Card Program. 

Our County Clerk division has a County Clerk Trainee internship position for candidates interested in supporting the clerical and processing functions within a high-volume public-facing environment. Interns in the County Clerk Office will support current office initiatives with the goal of improving equitable access to public records and services. Located at historic San Francisco City Hall, the County Clerk offers interns the opportunity to work on the front lines of service delivery to San Francisco residents and to a broader worldwide customer base. 

Role description

The Summer 2024 Internship Program is an initiative through the Office of the City Administrator, whose 25+ divisions and departments operate core internal and public-facing services in San Francisco. The internship program is open to current college juniors, seniors, graduate students, recent grads and other applicants who have an interest in working for local government. This internship program is a great opportunity to work alongside and shadow professionals in desired fields of interest and truly see the impact being made in public sector divisions through a hands-on learning experience!  

The duration of this internship is 12 weeks, with an opportunity to extend based on departmental need. 

Individuals hired will be appointed to a class 9922 Public Service Aide to Professional positions and compensated $27.46 per hour. 

Essential Duties 

Ensure customer ease and equitable access to County Clerk services by: 

  • Learning and evaluating the customer experience from appointment to transaction 

  • Developing, implementing, and analyzing customer service surveys 

  • Learning and evaluating a complex customer queuing system 

  • Tracking and evaluating transaction and wait times 

  • Assist in finding and resolving gaps in service delivery 

  

Additionally, the County Clerk Trainee will have the opportunity to: 

  • Meet and network with other City departments 

  • Attend staff, Board of Supervisors, legislative, and State meetings 

  • Participate in internal trainings 

  • Assist in the planning and execution of an annual Pride event 

How to qualify

Desirable Qualifications:  

  • 8-10 months of experience in processing or researching documents in accordance with laws, codes, or regulations in a legal, governmental, real estate, or financial services environment 
  • Strong written and oral communication 
  • Demonstratable ability to work in a team environment
  • Time management skills
  • Flexibility to adapt to changing priorities
  • Strong passion for public service. 

Education - A background in Finance, Business, Human Resources, Social Sciences, Legal, Program Management, Communication, Management/Administration, or similar academic fields. 

Experience - No previous experience required. 

  • Candidates must be prepared to receive on-the-job training to acquire the ability to apply professional standards and skills as they relate to customer service and public administration.

  • Selected candidates will be notified between April 1 – April 12, 2024 
  • Internship Program begins May 28, 2024

The selection process will include evaluation of applications in relation to minimum requirements. Applicants meeting the minimum qualifications are not guaranteed advancement to the interview.  

Depending on the number of applicants, the City departments may establish and implement additional screening mechanisms to comparatively evaluate the qualifications of candidates. If this becomes necessary, only those applicants whose qualifications most closely meet the needs of the various department will be invited to participate in the oral/performance interview.
