Role description

Special Project: Construction Contract WW-647R Biosolids Digester Facilities Project                                                                    

Position Summary

Under the general administrative and technical direction of the Construction Manager, Resident Engineer, Senior Construction Inspector or Construction Inspector, provide construction inspection on a variety of construction projects managed by the SFPUC Construction Management Bureau (CMB).  Projects are part of SFPUC Construction Management Bureau’s infrastructure programs, including but not limited to, the Sewer System Improvement Program, Hetchy Capital Improvement Projects, Job Order Contracts Program (JOC), and Spot Sewer Replacement Repair Program, Water Enterprise, and Wastewater Enterprise among others.  This position is required for construction inspection work by the Construction Management Bureau on the SFPUC’s Sewer System Improvement Program – Phase 1 valued at $4.4 Billion.  This position will be assigned to the Construction Management Bureau. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

This is the entry-level classification in the Construction Inspection series.  The duties of the Assistant Construction Inspector include but are not limited to the following: Perform construction inspection on multiple and concurrent construction contracts; Monitor and inspect work of contractors for compliance with plans, specifications and schedules; Perform inspections of concrete formwork, reinforcing steel placement, concrete placement, excavations and shoring, small and large diameter water pipe installations, pump station installations, heating/ventilation/air conditional equipment and system installations, fiber optic network installations, pile driving installations, power substations installations, ADA retrofits, painting, building interior/exterior installations, structural steel installations, & power wiring systems, among others; Witness and assist in coordinating/ conducting the testing of materials, equipment and installations; Assist in monitoring the excavation, loading and off-hauling of hazardous materials from construction sites; Assist in detecting and resolving disputes & problems; Ensure all contractor activities conform to applicable OSHA or other safety standards and fire safety codes; Report safety & traffic hazards, defective work and debris for Contractor’s corrective action; Prepare and archive project documentation including daily construction inspection reports, daily force account reports, project photographs and other construction records; Make field measurements, verify and prepare quantity and estimates for progress payments; Prepare and maintain records on quantities, labor, equipment and progress for change order work; and participate in planning, pre-construction, coordination, progress, safety tailgate and other field staff meetings. 

This position will require climbing ladders, scaffolding, formwork and/or crawling into tight spaces such as pipelines, tanks, and tunnels. 

Class 6317 performs related duties as assigned.

Work Schedule:

Full-Time, Monday – Friday, from 7:00am – 4:00pm, with overtime and/or weekend work as required.

How to qualify

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

These minimum qualifications establish the education, training, experience, special skills and/or license(s) which are required for employment in the classification. Additional qualifications (i.e., special conditions) may apply to a particular position and will be stated in the job ad.

1. Two (2) years of verifiable full-time experience in construction inspection work ensuring that plans and specifications are complied with, and the workmanship and material used meet specifications; OR

2. A baccalaureate degree from an engineering or architecture program that is accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET); OR

3. Two (2) years of verifiable full-time experience in construction, at the Superintendent/General Foreman level, supervising construction crews of more than six employees. Journey-level construction experience and/or drafting experience will not be accepted as qualifying.

Substitution:

1. Two (2) years of verifiable full-time experience equivalent to the City and County of San Francisco class 5310 Survey Assistant I, 5346 Mechanical Engineering Associate I, 5354 Electrical Engineering Associate I, 5364 Civil Engineering Associate I, 5305 Materials Testing Technician and 6230 Street Inspector may substitute for up to one (1) year of the required experience under #1 of the Experience and Training Guidelines for the Assistant Construction Inspector.

2. Possession of an associate degree in construction or engineering from an accredited college or university may substitute for up to one (1) year of the required experience under Minimum Qualification #1.

License and Certification:

Possession of a valid California Driver’s License.
