The Street and Sewer Repair Division oversees paving and street repair work, sewer repair, patch paving and pothole fixes; installation of traffic control devices (speed humps, raised crosswalks, speed tables); installation/modification to catch basins, manholes and culverts; grinding and paving for installation of ADA curb ramps; ongoing sand clearing from Great Highway roadway and promenade – all with the goal of creating a safer and more resilient city.
Public Works currently has a vacancy for a Clerk within the Street and Sewer Repair Division.
Role description
Under general supervision, the 1404 Clerk performs general clerical work. This is the journey-level position in the Clerk series. This Clerk will work in an energetic, fast-paced environment, working closely and collaboratively alongside laborers, trades persons, operation managers, and other staff. This position will report to the Superintendent and to the Office Manager.
EXAMPLES OF IMPORTANT AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

- Files, maintains, and retrieves documents, records and correspondence in accordance with established procedures.
- Codes and indexes documents, records, and correspondence. Methods may include color code, terminal digit, numerical, alphabetical and/or chronological order to ensure proper filing and ready access of data.
- Checks and reviews a variety of documents for completeness and accuracy.
- Compiles information and data necessary for the preparation of various departmental reports in which judgment may be exercised in the selection of data and materials.
- Prepares and maintains a variety of reports in which judgment may be exercised in the selection of data and materials.
- Makes mathematical computations using addition, subtraction, multiplication and division of whole numbers, decimals, and fractions.
- Receives and accounts for moderate amounts of money from the collection of fees and similar sources.
- Disseminates information and answers inquiries by communicating with the public, departmental personnel, and other departments.
- Operates office equipment, including calculators, photocopying equipment, adding machines, computer terminals, document imaging, fax machines and postage meters.
- Processes mail: opens, time stamps, sorts, and distributes the incoming mail; stuffs and seals envelopes; makes daily pickup and delivery to ensure timely mailing and receipt of mail.
How to qualify
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
These minimum qualifications establish the education, training, experience, special skills and/or license(s) which are required for employment in the classification. Please note, additional qualifications (i.e., special conditions) may apply to a particular position and will be stated on the exam/job announcement.
Experience: One (1) year of clerical experience including preparing and maintaining a variety of records and/or documents, filing, use of office equipment, public contact and processing of incoming and outgoing mail.
Substitution:
Any one of the following may substitute for six (6) months of the required experience:
- Completion of a clerical training program (240 hours); OR
- 15 semester units (or equivalent quarter units) of coursework from an accredited college or university; OR
- Completion of an approved City and County of San Francisco Clerical Administrative training program.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience working in office operation and administration.
- Proficient in MS Office suite software: outlook, word, excel, etc.
- Customer service and file organization experience are desired.
- Good communication skills.
