Role description

Under general supervision, The Water Service Inspector makes inspections on all types of water services, meters and connections. Installs meters and appurtenances, flushes hydrants, mains, appurtenances and fixtures while monitoring discharges for compliance. Performs cross connection inspections on various agricultural, municipal and commercial facilities. Inspects and tests approved backflow assembly's, investigates leaks and performs various water sampling procedures, Investigates complaints regarding water supply, pressure and water quality such as taste, odor and dirty water. Incumbent may be required to layout and connect temporary water supply systems in emergencies and assists with inspection and disinfection of transmission mains and can be assigned stand by duty and act as Shift Operator in charge of a specific projects for a specified period all within the SFPUC water Distribution and Transmission systems.

Essential Functions:

•           Interprets, enforces and carries out specific methods, procedures rules and regulations pertaining to customer water services and water distribution and transmission

        systems.

•           Investigates and inspects for leaks, water supply, volume and pressure complaints to include flow tests, plumbing tests and meter accuracy testing while making

        regular contact with municipal utility operators, the general public, property owners and contractors.

•           Furnishes information and explains specialized processes pertaining to service, supply and distribution.

•           Prepares maintenance logs and operating records related to water service, meters, valves and other applicable appurtenances.

•           Takes various water samples for analysis in response to consumer complaints and/or in accordance with the Total Coliform Rule and other regulatory compliance.

•           Disinfects various pipe and fittings for temporary supply systems.

•           Performs cross connection inspections and keeps detailed records of various plumbing and piping systems.

•           Writes detailed work orders and job plans and sets specifications as needed pertaining to construction of water services connections up to 60 inches in diameter.

Nature of work may involve considerable sustained effort out of doors and possibly in remote areas. Heavy lifting up to 90 lbs. working in inclement weather and wet conditions with exposure to various environmental elements and potential health hazard materials.

How to qualify

Experience:  Two (2) years of experience in a water or wastewater agency performing various phases of field and distribution operations including: water sample collection and field analysis, water service inspection and repair, meter readings, investigation of customer complaints, investigation of customer accounts or investigation and enforcement of efficiency codes and standards.

AND

License: Possession and maintenance of a valid driver’s license.

One year of full-time employment is equivalent to 2,000 hours (2,000 hours of qualifying
work experience is based on a 40-hour work week). Any overtime hours that you work
above 40 hours per week are not included in the calculation to determine full-time
employment.
