Role description

Salary Range (Steps 1 – 5) $38.5616 - $46.4381/hour: $80,208 - $96,591/year

Appointment Type: This is a Temporary Provisional (TPV) position excluded by the Charter from the competitive Civil Service examination process. It is considered "at will" and shall serve at the discretion of the Department Head. This position will be subject to the Permanent Civil Service examination process at a later date. Successful participation in the Permanent Civil Service examination and selection through an open competitive process is needed in order to be considered for the permanent appointment.

Job Description
One (1) or more Provisional /Full Time/Full Year positions. Under general supervision of the Dean of Library, Academic Tutoring, Educational Technology, and Online Programs and/or the Classified Supervisor, the Library Technical Assistant II performs a variety of tasks including supervising, training, and evaluating subordinate staff; assisting patrons in the use of library services and collections; explaining the library policies and resolving borrower problems and complaints; circulation desk duties; communication and coordination with other library departments and sites to facilitate student, staff, and community use of the library.

Example of Duties

1. Supervises and manages subordinate library circulation staff, students, interns, and volunteers; schedules and supervises daily duties of Library Technical Assistants I (3616); maintains weekly time logs for payroll; oversight of hiring, training, supervision and payroll for student assistants within the budgetary allotment for the department.
2. Coordinate tasks with the Library Automation Department with the circulation of library materials within library regulations when needed; maintains financial records of funds collected for library fines, fees, lost book charges, collection of bad checks, etc; places and removes library holds on student records in the administrative BANNER system; keeps statistics relevant to library needs.
3. Keeps abreast of updates in the system and ensures that staff learn all necessary procedures and act as the master trainer as necessary.
4. Manages and coordinates evaluations for circulation staff and students. Participates in the Supervisors Council.
5. Responsible for opening and closing of the library, ensuring that signage of building closure is correct and up-to-date; communicating with building manager about safety and security measures.
6. Participates in overall work of the Library by taking an active part in committees for the Library and the District.
7. Instructs students, staff, and community borrowers in the use of library technology such as scanners, photocopiers and printers.
8. Provides supervision and/or coverage at center libraries.
9. Attends meetings.
10. Other duties as assigned.

How to qualify

Minimum Qualifications:

An A.A. degree from an accredited college or university with a major in Library Information Technology AND one (1) year of full-time verifiable experience in technical library work in the areas of technical services, circulation, cataloging and/or information services equivalent to the duties performed by class 3616 Library Technical Assistant I in the City and County of San Francisco.

OR

Completion of a Library Information Technology certificate program from an accredited college or university AND two (2) years of full-time verifiable experience in library work, at least one (1) year of which must have included technical library work in the areas of technical services, circulation, cataloging and/or information services, equivalent to the duties performed by class 3616 Library Technical Assistant I in the City and County of San Francisco.

OR

Three (3) years of full-time verifiable experience in library work, at least one (1) year of which must have included technical library work in the areas of technical services, circulation, cataloging and/or information services, equivalent to the duties performed by class 3616 Library Technical Assistant I in the City and County of San Francisco.

One year of full-time employment is equivalent to 2000 hours. (2000 hours of qualifying work experience is based on a 40-hour work week.) Any overtime hours that you work above forty (40) hours per week are not included in the calculation to determine full-time employment.

Desirable Qualifications:

The stated desirable qualifications may be considered at the end of the selection process when candidates are referred for hiring.

1. General knowledge of library operations, practices, and procedures in both the technical and the public services areas.
2. Experience in a post-secondary educational institution.
3. Knowledge of and work experience with cataloging and using a bibliographic utility.
4. Excellent customer service skills and experience working in a diverse environment.

Verification of Experience: Verification of experience may be requested at any time during this recruitment and selection process. Selection Procedure/Conditions of Employment:

Applications will be screened for relevant qualifying experience. Additional screening mechanisms may be implemented in order to determine applicant’s qualifications. Only those applicants who most closely meet the needs of the Department will be invited to participate in the selection process. Application meeting the minimum qualifications are not guaranteed advancement to the interview.

New Hires: As approved by the governing Board of the San Francisco Community College District, beginning October 1, 2021, City College of San Francisco requires that new and current employees, students, and business partners participate in the Covid Safety Campaign. All parties entering CCSF facilities must demonstrate proof of covid vaccination in compliance with current CDC and SFDPH guidelines. New hires must submit documentation for verification to the Human Resources Department.

Benefits:

1. Additional Days Off with Pay. As stipulated in the appropriate bargaining agreements and board resolutions, Classified employees working full year (260 days/year) work schedules are granted, as paid days off, the days between Christmas and New Year’s Day, as well as an additional five (5) paid days off during spring break. Eligible school-term-only (STO) employees who are not scheduled to work the designated days between Christmas and New Year’s Day shall be granted three (3) paid days off to be scheduled by mutual agreements between the employee and supervisor. Eligible school-term-only (STO) employees who are not scheduled to work the days designated as Spring Break will not be paid for these days off.

2. New employees hired on or after October 1, 2013 will contribute 2% of salary to the San Francisco Retiree Health Care Trust Fund (RHCTF).
