Role description

As a division of the San Francisco District Attorney’s Office, the Bureau of Investigations consists of Sworn Peace Officers per Section 830.1 of the California Penal Code. Under general direction, plans, organizes, supervises, and participates in the activities of one or more investigative units in the District Attorney’s Office Bureau of Investigations. Assists in training and providing support for lower-level investigators and participates in more sensitive and complex criminal and civil investigations under the direction of the Chief Investigator.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:

As a sworn member of the Bureau of Investigations, the duties specified below are representative of the range of duties assigned to this position but are not limited to:

  • May serve as a team leader in field investigations; provides training and work
  • direction for subordinate investigators; may serve as a training officer in a specialized area of
  • criminal investigative work.
  • Participates in criminal investigative work involving a wide variety of difficult and complex
  • cases under the jurisdiction of the Bureau of Investigations.
  • Assists attorneys in preparation of cases for prosecution; locate and interview witnesses relative to criminal investigations; serve subpoenas and other legal processes; assists in managing witnesses.
  • May assist the Chief Investigator in confidential and sensitive cases
  • involving other city departments, public officials, or law enforcement personnel.
  • Conducts pre-employment background investigations.
  • Assists in investigations for the Child Abduction Team.
  • Assists with the California Witness Protection and Relocation Program.
  • Acts as a back-up to lieutenants assigned to the trial preparation unit.
  • Works closely with the Captain in supervision and management of the Dignitary Security Detail where reliability, discretion, and flexibility during work hours are essential.

KNOWLEDGE OF

  • Laws and ordinances effective in the County, State and Federal Governments relating to the area of enforcement, arrest and the rules of evidence and court procedures.
  • Computer software programs commonly used in the District Attorney’s Office.
  • Basic supervisory principles and practices.
  • Laws of arrest, search and seizure.
  • The extent of authority of the District Attorney’s Office as well as fundamental knowledge of the Bureau of Investigations policy and procedures manual.

SKILL AND ABILITY TO

  • Handle delicate, confidential investigations with tact, resourcefulness, and good judgment.
  • Direct other investigators performing investigative assignments.
  • Speak and write effectively.
  • Communicate and interact effectively with staff, allied agencies and citizens in the community.
  • Analyze and resolve administrative problems related to investigations.

How to qualify

  •  combination of education at the collegiate level in criminology, police science or a closely related field and responsible criminal investigative experience totaling eight years.

LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION

  • Appointee must possess a valid California Class C driver's license.
  • Possession of a valid Peace Officer Basic Certificate issued by the State of California Commission on Peace Officers Standards (POST). Must be currently certified by POST (i.e., active California Peace Officer within three years, or successfully completed the POST 136-hour Re-qualification Course upon hire).

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

  • Prior supervisory experience with a law enforcement agency.
  • Experience working special events and dignitary protection details.
  • Possess an Advanced Certificate from the California Commission on Peace Officers Standards (POST).

What else should I know?

  • Appointee may be assigned to work outside of normal office hours including evenings and weekends.
  • Appointee may have to travel outside of the county, state, or country on official business.
