Established in 1980 by the Airport Commission, SFO Museum’s mission is to delight, engage, and inspire a global audience with programming on a broad range of subjects; to collect, preserve, interpret, and share the history of commercial aviation; and to enrich the public experience at San Francisco International Airport. The Museum has been accredited by the American Alliance of Museums since 1999 and retains the distinction of being the only accredited museum in an airport. The Museum operates more than twenty-five sites throughout the Airport terminals, including fourteen galleries that exhibit a rotating schedule of art, history, photography, science, and cultural exhibitions. Among the sites is the San Francisco Airport Commission Aviation Library and Louis A. Turpen Aviation Museum, which houses a permanent collection of more than 150,000 objects related to the history of commercial aviation. 3542 Curator II, Assistant Curator of Graphic Design
Under direction from the 3546 Head of Graphic Design, the PEX 3542 Assistant Curator of Graphic Design assists with the planning, organization, and execution of graphic design materials supporting SFO Museum’s extensive exhibition schedule. This position creates and coordinates graphic content, ensures adherence to established design standards, maintains and develops the SFO Museum website, and serves as a liaison between the Museum’s Graphics Team and Airport-wide graphics initiatives.

Duties will include but will not be limited to:
- Collaborates with curators and other staff to meet goals, objectives, and priorities of the Museum’s Exhibition schedule;
- Designs and produces all visual materials including graphics, signage, murals, labels, and brochures for over 20 annual exhibitions and 10–15 accompanying print publications, ensuring alignment with the exhibition schedule;
- Develops, improves, and maintains SFO’s Museum website to promote public awareness and draw interest in the Museum by working with other Curators and staff in selection of appropriate images to accompany the text and enhancing procedures and processes, including the coordination of the interface between the Museum’s and Airport’s websites;
- Expands the SFO Museum brand visibility through graphics, signage, and video while maintaining the Museum’s aesthetic and professional standards and assists in the development and implementation of the SFO Museum brand guidelines;
- Designs and implements digital content that comply with ADA accessibility standards;
- Obtains price quotes and prepares and finalizes contractual agreements with printing companies for graphic production;
- Prepares and compiles necessary documents in securing funding requisitions in accordance with Accounting and Controller expenditure standards;
- Prepares press kits for all exhibitions;
- Collaborates with the Assistant Curator of Public Engagement to promote programs through social media, email campaigns, and print media;
- Serves as a liaison for Airport-wide graphic initiatives, ensuring brand alignment and high design standards;
- Supervises interns at the discretion of the Head of Graphic Design;
- Performs other functions and related projects as assigned and related to the 3542 Curator II.
How to qualify
Minimum Qualifications:
Education: Possession of a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in the fine arts, art history, decorative arts, design, history, library science, museum studies, natural history, science, technology, or other closely related disciplines.
Experience: Three (3) years of museum experience.
Desirable Qualifications:
- Experience with website design and management;
- Experience with the design and production of printed materials such as exhibition brochures and catalogues, promotional material, and stationery;
- Experience with Adobe Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, Bridge, and After Effects;
- Excellent abilities with HTML and Drupal, or similar CMS;
- Excellent abilities with the Mac platform and products;
- Experience with planning and organizing multiple projects.

One year full-time employment is equivalent to 2,000 hours (2,000 hours of qualifying work experience is based on a 40 hour work week). Any overtime hours that you work above 40 hours per week are not included in the calculation to determine full-time employment.

Transportation Security Administration (TSA) Security Clearance: Candidates for employment with the San Francisco Airport Commission are required to undergo a criminal history record check, including FBI fingerprints, and Security Threat Assessment in order to determine eligibility for security clearance and may be required to undergo drug/alcohol screening. Per Civil Service Commission Rule Section 110.9.1, every applicant for an examination must possess and maintain the qualifications required by law and by the examination announcement for the examination. Failure to obtain and maintain security clearance may be basis for termination from employment with the Airport Commission.
