Role description

Position Description:

In preparation for the June 2, 2026 Statewide Direct Primary Election, the Department is seeking applications for seasonal positions of Voting Center Voter Guide. Personnel in these positions will assist voters to navigate every major step of the voting process: entering the Voting Center, getting in the ballot-issuing line, proceeding to a voting booth, and finally casting a ballot. Personnel in these positions will also answer general questions from voters. After Election Day, personnel in these positions may transition to assisting with processing voted ballots returned by voters.

The ideal candidate must possess qualities such as active listening, empathy, problem-solving and communication. This position requires someone who will demonstrate the ability to learn new subject matter in a short period of time, maintain high standards of customer service during high-volume, fast-paced operations, and possess up-beat and optimistic attitude and ability to work in harmony with their colleagues.

In addition to the range of duties assigned to the 1404 job code, https://careers.sf.gov/classifications/?classCode=1404&setId=COMMN, the person in this position will have the following essential duties and responsibilities:

  1. Answer questions from and assist voters who visit the Voting Center to register or cast their ballot
  2. Direct voters to ballot-issuing stations and voting booths
  3. Help voters form a neat line
  4. Assist voters who are dropping off their voted ballots
  5. Collect ballots from Drop Boxes
  6. Set up and take down signages
  7. Assist with post-election tasks as needed

Position requires standing for prolonged periods of time and lifting, pulling or pushing up to 25 lbs.

Position Schedule and Hours:

The start date for this position may be between May 4, 2026 and June 1, 2026, and will run until approximately June 2, 2026; exact start and end date will be determined by the operational needs of the Department.

Work hours are generally 7:45 a.m. to 5 p.m. However, work hours will vary widely in accordance with the demands of the election cycle and will range between 20 and 40 hours per week. The person in this position must be available to work overtime both during the week and on weekends as necessary. Overtime hours are paid at 1.5 the hourly rate.

This is a temporary exempt as-needed position. Temporary exempt as-needed employees who have worked more than 1040 hours in any consecutive 12-month period, and whose normal work week at the time of inclusion in the system is not less than 20 hours are eligible for health coverage and retirement benefits.
