About the IT Operations Support Apprenticeship Program:
Apprentices will participate in a one-year, full-time 1090 IT Operations Support Apprentice position, on-the-job training provided by the host departments and related instruction, including IT coursework at City College of San Francisco, technical training provided by the Department of Technology, and professional development provided by the Department of Human Resources. Apprentices who complete the program will graduate with an industry-recognized certificate of completion from the CA Division of Apprenticeship Standards.

The City and County of San Francisco’s apprenticeship programs are a City-Union partnership, using an “earn-and-learn” model, including a combination of structured classroom learning with on-the-job training under close guidance and supervision. The City’s apprenticeship programs are led by the Department of Human Resources, Workforce Development Division, ApprenticeshipSF Team.
Role description
IT Operations Support Apprentice
Under close guidance and direct supervision from the Principal Technology Engineer, the 1090 IT Operations Support Apprentice learns to provide technical support for the Airport. This position will assist in providing technical and operational support and maintenance for computers and networks; assist in network upgrades; log, track and monitor all problems and requests; assist in providing technical support to department programs and staff in the use of computer applications. Learns to assign logons and rights, print queues and directory structures; learns to reset passwords; creates departmental groups; runs security programs; and performs related work which may include computerized data input and record maintenance.
You are excited about this opportunity because you will:
- Assists in providing technical and operational support and maintenance for computers and networks; assists with network upgrades; provides technical support to department programs and staff in the use of computer applications. Learns to assign logons and access rights, manage print queues and directory structures, reset passwords, create departmental groups, and run security programs.
- Assists in monitoring and operating computer and telecommunications systems, including data lines, terminals, printers, and related equipment; troubleshoots basic hardware and software problems; and coordinates with vendors for equipment repair.
- Assists in performing help desk functions for routine technical issues, including receiving, tracking, analyzing, and resolving service requests; defines and documents help desk solutions; assists with problem determination; analyzes and resolves system problems to support continuous system operations required for scheduled data processing functions; and administers off-site data storage.
- Gain experience to install and configure server hardware, workstations and various peripherals; learns to install software applications.
- Gain experience to produce, review and assist in the collection of client data, service and billing issues and documentation to comply with governmental mandates and regulations.
- Assist in monitoring and reviewing system software applications and procedures pertaining to accurate reporting; reviewing system output and data processing operations for accuracy and completeness; and providing communications support between systems.
- Assists in the development and production of system/end-user documentation for applications processing and procedures.
- Assists in the development and implementation of training activities and materials; instructs users in logon and document identification procedures.
- Gain experience to generate reports and statistics; perform system backups; and retrieve documents.
- Gain experience to perform related work which may include computerized data input and record maintenance.
- Perform other functions outlined in the 1090 IT Operations Support Apprentice classification.
How to qualify
Minimum Qualifications:
Applicants must be 18 years of age and over; AND
Applicants must have either a High School Graduation Diploma, Graduation Equivalent Degree (G.E.D.), or California High School Proficiency Certificate.
Desirable Qualifications:
- Completion of a San Francisco Unified School District Career and Technical Education (CTE) Program in Information & Communication Technologies.
- New or continuing student in the City College of San Francisco's Computer Network Information Technology (CNIT) program.
- One (1) year Call Center or Service Desk Agent experience with a strong understanding and direct experience with ServiceNow or other IT Ticketing system.
- One (1) year of System Administration experience with a strong understanding of system management tools, such as M365 Admin Center, ADManager, Active Roles, KACE System Management, etc.
- One (1) year experience providing first level Cyber Security support with a strong understanding of endpoint, cloud and identity protection software such as MECM Microsoft Endpoint Configuration Manager, CrowdStrike, BeyondTrust Remote Support, etc.
- One (1) year of aviation/airline operations support experience.

Selection Procedures: The selection process will include evaluation of applications in relation to minimum requirements. Depending on the number of applicants, the Department may establish and implement additional screening mechanisms to comparatively evaluate the qualifications of candidates. If this becomes necessary, only those applicants whose qualifications most closely meet the needs of the Department will be invited for an interview.

Transportation Security Administration (TSA) Security Clearance:
Candidates for employment with the San Francisco Airport Commission are required to undergo a criminal history record check, including FBI fingerprints, and Security Threat Assessment in order to determine eligibility for security clearance and may be required to undergo drug/alcohol screening. Per Civil Service Commission Rule Section 110.9.1, every applicant for an examination must possess and maintain the qualifications required by law and by the examination announcement for the examination. Failure to obtain and maintain security clearance may be basis for termination from employment with the Airport Commission.
