Power Enterprise 

The Power Enterprise, within the SFPUC, has two separate power programs, Hetch Hetchy Power, San Francisco’s Publicly Owned Utility serving 150 MQ of retail load, and CleanPowerSF, San Francisco’s Community Choice Aggregation program, serving 500+ MW of retail load. Power Enterprise serves this load with a combination of owned and purchased resources. SFPUC owns and operates the Hetch Hetchy Water and Power Project, which includes hydro-electric power generation in Moccasin, California; solar arrays throughout San Francisco; and biogas congeneration facilities, which together produce cost-effective energy with a zero greenhouse gas (GHG-free) emission profiles. Both of these power programs’ supply portfolios exceed State minimum renewable content. Power Enterprise provides its retail customers with distributed energy resource programs. In addition to these retail electricity service offerings, Power Enterprise is responsible for San Francisco street and pedestrian lighting.

Role description

Under general direction, the 5366 Engineering Associate II in the Power Enterprise Asset Management Group applies technical engineering and drafting techniques in preparation of electrical engineering drawings in the field of streetlight and electrical distribution installation, maintenance and proposed improvements, as-built documentation, and maintains data on AutoCAD, GIS, and CMMS systems. Supervise other personnel including clerical and technical staff. This position is located in San Francisco.

Essential functions of the class include:

1.         Support the preparation of streetlight and electrical distribution designs and supervises the preparation of plans, specifications, and documents using manual and computer-aided equipment AutoCAD including setting and enforcing standards. Check for accuracy and compliance with drafting standards.

2.         Update and revise street lighting and electrical distribution maps manually and digitally. Perform simple tracings, drawings of maps, plates, charts, electrical layouts, and details.

3.         Conduct routine field checks related to street lighting and electrical distribution plan, layouts and details; collect and assist in the calculation of data for the preparation of designs and drawings; make preliminary checks and review drawings to assure accuracy; assist in the preparation of lighting analysis and studies using AGI32 illumination software.

4.         Assist in the preparation of cost and quantity estimates for engineering projects; process contractor construction shop submittals through logging, and filing of materials.

5.         Index, reproduce and maintain files, drawings and computer data bases; input of using Geographic Information Systems (GIS)/Maximo on a daily basis.

6.         Receive outages and related problems from the general public through 311 and other City agencies; generate report of street lighting outages for CCSF and PG&E schedule streetlights.

7.         Monitors and responds to department email inquiries for DPW ENVISTA system to address Notice of Intent (NOI) requests.

8.         Assist in the retrieval of Underground Service Alert notification via email using AutoCAD Map for streetlight location verification and ownership.

9.         Assigns asset identification for physical assets accepted by the Power Enterprise.

10.     Plans, assigns, monitors, and evaluates the work of subordinate personnel; includes completing performance evaluations.

11.     Drives a vehicle to work sites and meetings.

12.     Develops and implements procedures and trains staff to improve work products and output.

13.     Assists in the processing and management of construction and procurement contracts.

How to qualify

Six (6) years of verifiable technical experience in the preparation of designs and drafting of plans and specifications for civil, mechanical, electrical, transportation, and/or structural engineering projects, of which at least two (2) years must have been in a position(s) with duties equivalent to one of the following classifications: Class 5346 Mechanical Engineering Associate I; 5354 Electrical Engineering Associate I, or 5364 Civil Engineering Associate I.
