Street Environmental services keeps the City’s streets, sidewalks and other public spaces clean with mechanical and manual sweeping, graffiti abatement and power washing. The 24/7 operation runs specialized operations, including the Hot Spots teams that focus on encampment cleanups, CleanCorridorsSF, which provides a weekly deep cleaning to neighborhood commercial corridors, and proactive illegal dumping runs in the most impacted areas. The team also supports volunteer programs to advance San Francisco’s cleaning and greening initiatives.

 

Role description

Under general supervision, the Public Relations Assistant performs a variety of duties requiring a high level of responsibility; carries out complex tasks relative to the performance of Department Workforce Development Initiatives; assist with researching and analyzing data as it relates to operations of Public Works Workforce Development Programs.

Examples of Important and Essential Duties:

  • Assists in conducting difficult and complex analysis, procedural, organizational and operational investigations, surveys and/or research relating to Public Works operations.
  • Provides routine information to departmental personnel on the preparation of budget and policy documents, reports, demographics, and program implementation.
  • Corresponds with other departmental personnel to assist with the management and/or preparation of budgets, grants, or contracts that pertain to Public Works operations and/or Workforce Development Programs and Initiatives.
  • Assists in preparing reports, proposals, and program delivery calendars
  • Prepares, generates, and updates reports, surveys, databases and mailing lists.
  • Assists with the preparation and submittal of supplemental requests.
  • Prepares graphs and charts for presentations.
  • Assists in the preparation of quarterly Pre-Apprenticeship and Apprenticeship meetings.
  • Inputs and maintains data in computerized system and generates computerized reports.
  • Maintains Pre-Apprentice and Apprentice files, including tracking of training hours, documentation of all certifications, and tracking salary step progression.
  • Provides answers to program questions
  • Assist with the implementation of Workforce Development Programs
  • Drives a vehicle to work sites and meetings
  • Assist with Public Outreach for Workforce Development Programs and Initiatives
  • Performs related duties as required

Working Conditions
The nature of the work may require working in inclement weather conditions, around trash and refuse, will require working variable shifts including weekends and holidays.

How to qualify

Education:
Requires possession of a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in public relations, journalism, English, mass communications, public administration, public policy or a related field.

License and Certification: California Driver's License

Substitution:
Professional experience in public affairs, public information, editorial, newspaper, magazine, radio, television, public relations, social media, digital engagement, advertising or similar work involving collection and dissemination of news and information may be substituted for the required degree on a year-for-year basis (up to a maximum of 2 years). Thirty (30) semester units or forty-five (45) quarter units equal one year.

Note(s):

  • One-year full-time employment is considered equivalent to 2000 hours (2000 hours of qualifying work experience is based on a 40 hour work week). Any overtime hours that you work above forty (40) hours per week are not included in the calculation to determine full-time employment.
  • A valid out-of-state driver’s license is acceptable during the application process. A valid California driver's license must be obtained prior to appointment and maintained throughout employment.
