About:

The San Francisco Digital Services Team is transforming how residents interact with the City, by building services designed around the people that use them. Led by the Chief Digital Services Officer, the team is comprised of product managers, designers, developers, and content strategists. As a member of this team, you would be part of a new and growing movement, with an opportunity to shape the City’s approach to technology. The Digital Services team is working to transform the way San Franciscans access City services, primarily on SF.gov. We’re taking a service-oriented approach to making City government more accessible, consistent, inclusive, and reliable.

As a digital solutions engineer for Digital Services, you’ll be responsible for building forms, data integrations, and web content customizations in partnership with our Delivery team and our partners throughout the City. You will work closely with designers, developers, researchers, data scientists, and product managers to efficiently migrate existing digital services and build new ones using our CMS, form platform, and API library.

You will also serve as a technical bridge between our Delivery team and the product and platform development teams, helping to identify needed new features and document their technical specifications. You will have the opportunity to advance your technical skills in multiple areas under the mentorship of senior engineers, and to be deeply involved in the creation of inclusive digital services for the public.

Role description

This role will be responsible for building forms, data integrations, and web content customizations in partnership with our Delivery team and our partners throughout the City. It will also serve as a technical bridge between our Delivery team and the product and platform development teams, helping to identify needed new features and document their technical specifications.

Serve as a consulting software engineer and domain expert in support of migrating content and forms into the digital services platform
Work across disciplines to gather requirements and configure/implement solutions with our platform using python, javascript, and other web technologies
Understand the quality of content being produced and work closely with our content and delivery teams to understand their processes and synthesize feature requests for product engineering.
Contribute to the research and development of a robust platform that can support complex department service designs as a user and codeveloper.
Leverage integrations between our CMS data structures, micro services, APIs, and the design system to quickly turn around product deliverables.
Work on a fast-moving agile team with product managers, designers, analysts, and UX experts to build websites, web applications, and interactive visualizations that are user-focused and consistent.
Participate in prototyping, feature prioritization, scrum meetings, code review, and architecture discussions.
Read and contribute to documentation, tests, and design systems.
Support digital services, including occasional support outside of business hours.

How to qualify

These minimum qualifications establish the education, training, experience, special skills and/or license(s) which are required for employment in the classification. Please note, additional qualifications (i.e., special conditions) may apply to a particular position and will be stated on the exam/job announcement.

Education:

An associate degree in computer science or a closely related field from an accredited college or university OR its equivalent in terms of total course credits/units [i.e., at least sixty (60) semester or ninety (90) quarter credits/units with a minimum of twenty (20) semester or thirty (30) quarter credits/units in computer science or a closely-related field].

Experience:

One (1) year of experience analyzing, installing, configuring, enhancing, and/or maintaining the components of an enterprise network.

Substitution:

Additional experience as described above may be substituted for the required degree on a year-for-year basis (up to a maximum of two (2) years). One (1) year is equivalent to thirty (30) semester units/r forty-five (45) quarter units with a minimum of 10 semester / 15 quarter units in computer science or a closely related field.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

Familiarity with JavaScript and any front-end framework
Familiarity with any API framework.
Experience building one off deliverables using code and other tools. Examples include;
- creating and editing website content in a modern CMS
- low-code or no-code website/form creation, in a professional or personal context
- using frameworks such as Django or RoR to deliver simple APIs or data models
- creating dashboards or reports using tools such as Pandas, Dash, R, or Tableau
Experience with & excitement about working with multidisciplinary stakeholders inside and outside the technology team: people with Product Management, UX, Content Design, Policy, or requirements gathering experience encouraged to apply
Past success working with stakeholders in a regulated or complex organization
Past experience or education in a policy field
Very strong oral, written, & digital communication skills

COMPENSATION RANGE: $129,064 - 162,344 annually
