The mission of the Department of Elections (Department) is to provide equitable access to voting and election-related services and to conduct free, fair, and functional elections for the City and County of San Francisco. Role description
Position Description
In preparation for the March 5, 2024 Presidential Primary Election, the Department is seeking applications for seasonal positions to complete the District Support Team. The Department staffs polling places with approximately 2,000 volunteer poll workers for each election, and a team of approximately 20 District Support Team members provides assistance to polling places.
The assignment for District Support Team staff requires the following:
- Participate in one paid 8-hour training session on Monday, February 26, 2024.
- Work begins on Tuesday, February 27, 2024 and continues on weekdays until March 12, 2024. Work will consist of operating a City vehicle and delivering equipment to polling places before Election Day, and retrieving equipment from polling places after Election Day.
- Work one approximately 20-hour day on Election Day on March 5. Work will consist of operating a City vehicle and drive to and from predetermined locations within the San Francisco area.
- Possession of a valid California driver's license, and ability to provide a driving record from the Department of Motor vehicles prior to employment.
On Election Day, District Support Team staff provide direct support to 28-29 polling places and are tasked with ensuring polling places adhere to state and federal requirements for physical accessibility according to the Americans with Disabilities Act. In the course of the long, physically tasking day, District Support Team staff work under minimum supervision and under the direction of the Department of Elections, to:
- Install accessibility mitigations such as signage, threshold ramps, and hazard mitigations.
- Survey polling place set-up for Americans with Disabilities Act compliance throughout Election Day.
- Report problems to the Department of Elections on issues and resolutions at the polling sites; and carry out received instructions.
Position Schedule, Requirements, and Work Location
Travel within the city is required daily. Work location will also vary within the San Francisco area. Position will require standing for a prolonged period of time, driving to various sites, setting up and using various computer software and equipment (e.g. voting equipment, etc.), lifting and moving up to 50 pounds.
This is a short-term assignment that begins on Monday, February 26, 2024 and ends on March 12, 2024. Hours are Monday through Friday from 8:00am to 5:00pm and up to a 20-hour day on Election Day. There are also additional tasks that may need to be completed on as needed basis. Overtime hours are paid at 1.5 the hourly rate.
This is a temporary exempt as-needed position. Temporary exempt as-needed employees who have worked more than 1040 hours in any consecutive 12-month period, and whose normal work week at the time of inclusion in the system is not less than 20 hours are eligible for health coverage and retirement benefits. Position Salary: $26.5625 to $32.275 hourly
$55,250 to $67,132 annually
How to qualify
Minimum Qualifications
Applicants must have a valid California driver's license and a clean DMV record.
Experience:
Six (6) months of clerical experience including preparing and maintaining a variety of records and/or documents, filing, use of office equipment, public contact and processing of incoming and outgoing mail.
Substitution:
Any one of the following may substitute for the required experience:
Completion of 15 semester units (or equivalent quarter units) of coursework from an accredited college or university; OR
Completion of a clerical training program (240 hours); OR
Completion of an approved City and County of San Francisco Clerical Administrative training program (as designated on the job announcement).

- Registered California voter
- Ability to work up to a 20-hour day
- Ability to track and address numerous high-priority tasks simultaneously with a professional and confident demeanor
- Diplomatic and conscientious people-management skills
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds
- Ability to use, or learn how to use, a smart phone to track Election Day tasks
- Ability to safely drive and park a large vehicle (minivan or SUV) within City of San Francisco
