The Bureau of Building and Street Repair (BSR) provides professional construction, repair, and remodeling to City-owned facilities. We perform emergency-repair services twenty-four (24) hours a day to ensure that Police, Fire, and other Public Safety operations are fully functional; and oversee paving and street repair work, including patch paving and filling potholes, as well sewer repair, which includes brickwork.
Public Works currently has a vacancy for a Soft Floor Coverer within the Bureau of Building and Street Repair.
Role description
Under general supervision, as a Soft Floor Coverer, you will perform skilled, journey-level work in connection with the construction, maintenance, repair and remodeling of buildings and facilities in relation to floors and other surfaces.
Important and Essential Duties:
Your duties as a Soft Floor Coverer may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Select, measure, cut, fit, and lay floor coverings such as padding, carpet, linoleum, asphalt, cork, vinyl composition tile, vinyl composite mastipave, synthetic grass, epoxy, urethane, plastics, metals or rubber tile according to job specifications.
- Preparatory removal of floor coverings, wall-base coverings, adhesives, underlayments, sanding, patching, sealing, and priming of the installation surface.
- Installation on floors, walls, ceilings, stairs, fixtures, furnishings, or exterior application on structures, patios, pool perimeters, sport fields, area ways, all other like or similar applications, whether permanent or temporary.
- Installation of lining felt, carpet, pad, underlayment compositions, leveling compounds, or any material used as a base for the finished surface.
- Measure and mark off floor in accordance with floor covering plan.
- Application of mastic to floors prior to laying floor covering.
- Application and fitting of fasteners, tackless strips, protective and decorative trim relating to the installation of linoleum, carpet and other materials specified herein tape, nosing, top set or butt-to-base, cap, corner beads, edging, hinging, and all other accessories, and related sundries.
- Use of hand and power tools to complete duties such as using a hand-operated carpet power stretcher in putting carpet into place, etc.
- Roll linoleum with large roller to adhere it to floor surface.
- Sew binding tape on rugs and carpets to make a finished edge and to prevent raveling.
- Repair tears and opened seams in carpets and rugs and patch carpeting, by sewing, heatseaming or any other accepted process.
- Repair seams and cracks in linoleum and vinyl composition tile floors.
- Maintain tools and equipment.
- Maintain records of completed work.
- Drive automotive equipment to and from work sites.
Nature of Work: The nature of the work will require keen color perception and physical strength and agility.
How to qualify
Minimum Qualifications:
Training/Experience:
Completion of a recognized apprenticeship training program in carpet, linoleum and soft tile laying work of at least four (4) years' duration and three (3) years of verifiable journey-level experience in carpet, linoleum and soft tile laying work.
OR
Five (5) years of verifiable journey-level experience in the installation of carpet, linoleum, and soft tile, including at least one (1) year in each specialty in carpet, linoleum and soft tile.
AND
License:
Possession and maintenance of a valid driver’s license.
CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT
Valid Driver’s License: Applicants must possess a valid State of California driver’s license with no restrictions that would prohibit them from legally performing the essential functions and duties of the role.
