Appointment Type: Temporary Exempt (TEX), this is an as-needed position that is limited to 1,040 hours per fiscal year. This position is excluded by the Charter from the competitive Civil Service examination process and shall serve at the discretion of the Appointing Officer.
About Us:
The Real Estate Division is comprised of a team of over 220 full time staff delivering professional real estate services to a variety of clients. The Division completes appraisals and analysis of real property considered for City sale, lease, development or acquisition, and acts as a real estate consultant to Departments, the Mayor, and the Board of Supervisors.
We have responsibility for: Real Property Transactions: Acquisition and leases of real property required for City purposes (including searches, negotiations and drafting of real property agreement); Sale of surplus real property owned by the City; ; Operations at the Alemany Farmers' and Flea Markets (100 Alemany); Providing Custodial and Engineering services for various City departments at over 60 different locations; Full service property management services to over 5,000,000 square feet of city-owned offices, including City Hall, 1 South Van Ness Avenue, 25 Van Ness, 49 South Van Ness, Public Safety Building (San Francisco Police Headquarters), Office of Chief Medical Examiner, and the Hall of Justice.
Role description
Under supervision, the 2708 Custodian performs routine manual cleaning tasks in public buildings, schools, other facilities and surrounding areas; and performs related duties as required.
Essential Functions
- Sweeps, scrubs, mops, spots and waxes floors; vacuums and cleans rugs and carpets.
- Cleans, dusts and polishes cabinets, furniture and woodwork; empties and cleans waste receptacles and ashtrays.
- Cleans stairways and hallways; cleans and disinfects restrooms and replenishes supplies; may perform minor duties in unplugging sinks and toilets; cleans offices and lobbies; cleans ceilings, walls, window shades, light fixtures and venetian blinds.
- Assists in moving and arranging furniture and equipment.
- Turns out lights and locks doors and windows.
- Operates scrubbers, buffers, waxers and related electrical appliances and equipment; may tend simple, low pressure heating and ventilating systems; may check water levels in gauges and periodically perform routine servicing to boilers and pumps.
- In recreational areas, cleans auditoriums, gymnasiums, club houses and locker rooms; picks up papers and rubbish in play areas; hangs flags and decorations; reports evidences of vandalism, broken plumbing, windows, doors, locks, etc.
- May wash interior glass partitions and interior and exterior windows which can be easily reached from floor or ground level.
- As school custodian, may supervise and maintain order among students during recess periods; distributes milk or other refreshments to students; performs minor duties in repairing chairs, desks and toys.
How to qualify
1. Six (6) months (1040 hours) verifiable paid full-time custodial or janitorial experience at a commercial building (such as an office building, warehouse, retail or wholesale store, or non-profit agency or a commercial facility (such as a university, hospital stadium, auditorium, hotel/motel, etc.); OR
2. Certificate of completion of a Custodial Training Program equivalent to those certified by the City and County of San Francisco Human Services Agency; OR
3. Verification of current enrollment in a custodial training course equivalent to those certified by the City and County of San Francisco Human Services Agency at the time of application. Candidates who are enrolled in a custodial training course at the time of application must submit verification of having completed the course (e.g., a copy of their certificate), prior to appointment. Candidates will remain under waiver until such time that verification is provided.

- City College of San Francisco's Custodial Training Program
- Self Help for the Elderly's Housekeeping Program
- Toolworks Janitorial Training Program
- Community Housing Partnership, Property Management/Maintenance Program
- Goodwill Industries, Community Jobs Program (CJP) - Janitorial Training Program
- Career Resources Development Center (CRDC) Maintrain Program
- JVS - Janitorial Training Program
Verification: Applicants may be required to submit verification of qualifying education and experience at any point in the application and/or departmental selection process. Written verification (proof) of qualifying experience must verify that the applicant meets the minimum qualifications stated on the announcement. City employees will receive credit for the duties of the class to which they are appointed. Credit for experience obtained outside of the employee’s class will be allowed only if recorded in accordance with the provisions of the Civil Service Commission Rules. Experience claimed in self-employment must be supported by documents verifying income, earnings, business license and experience comparable to the minimum qualifications of the position. Medical Testing: Prior to appointment, eligible candidates must successfully pass the TB testing process.
Security Clearances & Background Investigations: Positions in this classification may require that successful candidates who become eligible for appointment may be required to go through a background investigation to determine the candidate’s suitability for employment in this classification. Factors considered in the investigation may include employment history, use of illegal/controlled substances. Reasons for rejection based on this investigation may include, but not limited to: applicable convictions, repeated or serious violations of the law, inability to accept supervision, inability to follow rules and regulations, falsification of application materials and/or other relevant factors. Failure to obtain and maintain security clearance may be basis for termination.
