Role description
Under direct supervision of Principal Network Engineer, the Journey Network Engineer will perform, support and assist in the LAN Remediation projects and Departmental Moves. The incumbent will provide functional guidance to Seniors Network Engineers and other members of the team; provide functional and technical assistance to formulate computer system scope and objectives; assist in developing and/or modifying procedures to solve problems using information systems; prepare detailed documentation for computer operations/programs sequencing; perform multiple software functions; and support hardware platforms. Assignments are in highly technical and business functional areas.
Position Responsibilities
- Assist in installing, configuring and documenting Enterprise level networks and devices according to Business requirements. Network devices include but are not limited to: CISCO 9XXX Catalyst, 38XX Switches, ASA55XX, CISCO VPN Appliances, and Palo Alto NGFW. Monitor, patch, and assist in upgrading and troubleshooting network configurations. Establish network policies, procedures and standards. Develop alternative solutions to problems within established guidelines and standards. Ensure that all documentation on process and procedures are available and updated regularly.
- Assist in implementing networks using various routing protocols including OSPF, EIGRP and Enterprise level BGP.
- Plan, implement and provide primary support of network infrastructure, implementation of network security policies and network performance.
- Validate network specifications and network equipment configurations based upon business requirements.
- Provide strong customer service and facilitate collaboration between project teams and clients. Work closely with our other Systems and Network Engineers and Network Operations Staff to ensure network connectivity requirements are fulfilled in a timely manner.
- Attend planning meetings and work closely with application development teams.
- Perform other duties assigned. Ability to lift up to 50lbs.
- Incumbent may be required to provide 24-hour on-call support to ensure rapid recovery from software or hardware problems for mission-critical systems and networks.
Job Type:
This Temporary Exempt - Full Time position is excluded by the Charter from the competitive civil service examination process and shall serve at the discretion of the appointment officer. The anticipated duration of this project position is thirty-six (36) months and will not result in an eligible list or permanent civil service hiring.
Nature of Work:
Incumbent must be willing to work a 40-hour week as determined by the department. Travel within San Francisco may be required.
Full-time, usually Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. However, this position will require applicant to be available to work in a rotational on-call, after-hours capacity and to work weekends and holidays whenever necessary to support the 24/7 operation.
The City and County of San Francisco does not sponsor visas. If you have an F1 student visa, the City will not sponsor the “optional practical training” requirement. All applicants must be able to demonstrate that they are legally able to work in the United States without visa sponsorship by the employer.
Work Location:
Incumbent will conduct the majority of work at the Department of Technology, (1 S Van Ness, Ave San Francisco, CA 94103). However, there may be situations where the incumbent will be required to work at other sites throughout the City of San Francisco as necessary.
If hired, incumbent must be a resident of or relocate to the State of California within 4 weeks as a condition of employment.
This position supports remote work. The incumbent may be permitted to work a hybrid schedule with their supervisor’s approval, after which they must work at least two days in the office every two weeks.
How to qualify
Education:
An associate degree in computer science, computer engineering, information systems, or a closely related field from an accredited college or university OR its equivalent in terms of total course credits/units [i.e., at least sixty (60) semester or ninety (90) quarter credits/units with a minimum of twenty (20) semester or thirty (30) quarter credits/units in one of the fields above or a closely-related field].
Experience:
One (1) year of experience analyzing, installing, configuring, enhancing, and/or maintaining the components of an enterprise network.
License and Certification:
Substitution:
Additional experience as described above may be substituted for the required degree on a year-for-year basis (up to a maximum of two (2) years). One (1) year is equivalent to thirty (30) semester units/r forty-five (45) quarter units with a minimum of 10 semester / 15 quarter units in one of the fields above or a closely related field.
Completion of the 1010 Information Systems Trainee Program may be substituted for the required degree.
Desirable Qualifications:
- To have knowledge of EIGRP, OSPF, and BGP.
- To have knowledge of Cisco and Palo alto NGF firewalls.
- To have knowledge of F5 LTM and GTM.
- Ability to assist and maintain Wide area network and Local area networks.
- Ability to suggest improvements to the network performance, capacity, and scalability.
- Ability to assist and resolve network connectivity issues independently.
- Ability to mentor team members through knowledge sharing.
- Class C Driver’s License required.
