The Mission of the San Francisco Department of Public Health (SFDPH) is to protect and promote the health of all San Franciscans. SFDPH strives to achieve its mission through the work of multiple divisions - the San Francisco Health Network, Population Health, Behavioral Health Services, and Administration. The San Francisco Health Network is the City’s only complete system of care and has locations throughout the City, including Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center, Laguna Honda Hospital and Rehabilitation Center, and over 15 primary care health centers. The Population Health Division (PHD) provides core public health services for the City and County of San Francisco: health protection, health promotion, disease and injury prevention, and disaster preparedness and response. 

The eligible list resulting from this recruitment may be utilized to fill future and current vacancies in this class at other locations within the DPH for the duration of the eligible list. 

Role description

Examples of Important and Essential Duties:
The essential functions of a 2204 Dental Hygienist include, but are not limited to:

  • Conduct oral health assessments, X-rays, cancer screenings, periodontal probing, local anesthesia, soft-tissue curettage, and scaling/root planning.
  • Apply sealants and fluoride and provide oral health instructions.
  • Educate patients, nurses, staff, and the community on oral health and prevention. Develop and adjust service protocols for various settings.
  • Create educational materials and assist in co-coordinating case management.
  • Set program goals, track progress, and prepare reports.
  • Perform research work, training, and act as consultant to public health and school personnel on oral health programs.
  • Manage dental supplies and equipment.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

How to qualify

EXPERIENCE: One year of verifiable full-time experience as a Dental Hygienist; AND

LICENSE: Possession of a valid Registered Dental Hygienist (RDH) license issued by the Dental Hygienist Committee of California; AND

  • Possession of, or the ability to obtain within two weeks of hire, and maintenance of a valid Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certificate issued by the American Heart Association

Applicants must meet the minimum qualification requirement by the final filing date unless otherwise noted.

One-year of full-time employment is equivalent to 2,000 hours (2,000 hours of qualifying work experience is based on a 40-hour work week).

Selection Procedures:
After application submission, candidates deemed qualified must complete all subsequent steps to advance in this selection process, which includes the following:

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE EXAMINATION: (WEIGHT: 100%)
Candidates that meet the minimum qualifications will then be invited to complete a required Supplemental Questionnaire. This questionnaire is designed to measure knowledge, skills and/or abilities (KSAs) in job-related areas that have been identified as critical for satisfactory performance in this position.

Additional selection processes may be conducted by the hiring department prior to making final hiring decisions.

Certification
The certification rule for the eligible list resulting from this examination will be the Rule of the List.

Eligible List/Score Report:

The duration of the eligible list resulting from this examination process will be 12 months and may be extended with the approval of the Human Resources Director.
