The Mission of the San Francisco Department of Public Health (SFDPH) is to protect and promote the health of all San Franciscans. SFDPH strives to achieve its mission through the work of multiple divisions - the San Francisco Health Network, Population Health, Behavioral Health Services, and Administration. The San Francisco Health Network is the City’s only complete system of care and has locations throughout the City, including Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center, Laguna Honda Hospital and Rehabilitation Center, and over 15 primary care health centers. The Population Health Division (PHD) provides core public health services for the City and County of San Francisco: health protection, health promotion, disease and injury prevention, and disaster preparedness and response. Behavioral Health Services operates in conjunction with SFHN and provides a range of mental health and substance use treatment services. 

Role description

The current vacancy is located at Laguna Honda Hospital and Rehabilitation Center. 

Under general supervision, the 2624 Dietitian develops and plans special diets for patients. The essential duties include but are not limited to the following: 

  • Confers with attending physicians, nurses and the chief dietitian on individual therapeutic diet orders for patients; contacts patients regarding diet changes, new diet orders and special requests or questions; reviews patients, charts for case history, laboratory findings and other pertinent matters;
  • Oversees food service to bed patients requiring special diets; supervises food handling, sanitation and cleaning procedures in ward kitchens; instructs auxiliary employees in rudimentary principles of nutrition and sanitation; interprets rules and regulations and hospital policies and procedures;
  • Writes therapeutic diets in advance; writes daily food orders and tally sheets for cooks who prepare foods for special diets; confers with chef as to availability of certain items, required changes and other related matters;
  • Oversees special diet dining room; assures that correct amounts of special diet foods are provided; gives instructions as to serving procedures; and
  • Keeps records and compiles reports concerning special diet services and statistics I such as: number of meals served, special menus, analyses of diets, food costs, supplies issued, inventory of supplies on hand and other related and miscellaneous matters.

The Dietitian may perform other duties as assigned/required.

How to qualify

License and Certification:
Requires possession of a current valid registration as a Registered Dietitian with the Commission on Dietetic Registration (the credentialing agency for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics).

Applicants must meet the minimum qualification requirement by the final filing date unless otherwise noted.

One-year fulltime employment is equivalent to 2,000 hours (2,000 hours of qualifying work experience is based on a 40-hour work week).

Selection Procedures

Assessment Component
Candidates that meet the minimum qualifications will be invited to participate in a Training and Experience evaluation that is designed to measure the knowledge, skills, and abilities in job related areas that have been identified as critical for satisfactory performance in this position.

Training and Experience Evaluation (Weight: 100%) 
Candidates must achieve a passing score on the Training and Experience evaluation in order to continue in the selection process and will be placed on the confidential eligible list in rank order according to their final score. The link to the training and experience evaluation will be emailed to the address listed on the candidate’s online application. Candidates will be required to respond to the training and experience evaluation in the time frame indicated.

Additional selection processes may be conducted by the hiring department prior to making final hiring decisions.

Certification
The certification rule for the eligible list resulting from this examination will be the Rule of Ten Scores.

The duration of the eligible list resulting from this examination process will be 6 months and may be extended with the approval of the Human Resources Director.
