Role description

Position Summary:

The Power Platform Applications Developer will be assigned to the Business Workflow Automation team. Projects will deliver fully functional, integrated applications within the Microsoft Power Platform ecosystem. These deliverables will include automated workflows through Power Automate, internal Power App canvas and model-driven applications, and public-facing websites built with Power Pages, all of which are expected to enhance both customer-facing services and internal operations.

In addition to Power Platform tools, deliverables may include supporting technologies such as Python and JavaScript. Use of artificial intelligence (AI) will be encouraged throughout the development process. Relationship diagrams, flow charts, and technical specifications will be created for all deliverables. The completion of these projects will improve workflow automation, enable better data-driven decision-making, and create a seamless user experience for all stakeholders.

Position Responsibilities:

The Power Platform / Business Workflow Automation Developer is responsible for the entire software development life cycle, including designing, developing, deploying, documenting, and maintaining solutions using the Power Platform and complementary tools.

The role includes building canvas and model-driven Power Apps, developing flows with Power Automate, and creating public-facing websites using Power Pages. The developer will integrate data from Dataverse, SharePoint, and external sources such as SQL Server, Snowflake, and APIs. The role also emphasizes customer-focused solutions, strong fundamentals in computer science, and a deep understanding of relational databases and APIs.

Essential duties include, but are not limited to, the following:

  1. Design and develop canvas and model-driven applications using Microsoft Power Apps to support business operations.
  2. Design and develop automated workflows using Power Automate to streamline manual processes across departments.
  3. Build and manage public-facing websites through Power Pages, ensuring they meet security and user accessibility standards.
  4. Integrate Dataverse, SharePoint, and external data sources such as SQLServer, Snowflake, and APIs into the Power Platform environment.  Use Python and JavaScript to complement Power Platform development
  5. Develop reports and dashboards using PowerBI.
  6. Collaborate with teams and stakeholders to determine requirements, translate them into technical solutions, provide technical support and ensure the project meets business objectives.
  7. Provide ongoing support and updates for existing Power Apps solutions, ensuring they meet performance, security, and usability standards.
  8. Document technical solutions, including workflow diagrams, sequence diagrams, and entity relationship diagrams for all deliverables.
  9. Create and consume custom Power App components
  10. Leverage AI tools such as Copilot, ChatGPT, and n8n
  11. Apply software design principles (e.g., modular design, Big O considerations)
  12. Participate in user group meetings, online forums, and other community engagements to stay updated on the latest trends and best practices in Power Platform development, ensuring performance and reliability.

Appointment Type

Permanent Exempt (PEX), Full Time position is excluded by the Charter from the competitive civil service examination process and shall serve at the discretion of the appointment officer. The anticipated duration of this project position is thirty-six (36) months and will not result in an eligible list or permanent civil service hiring. Project-based positions cannot be ongoing or exceed 36 months

Work Location

Incumbent will conduct the majority of work at the Department of Technology, (1 S Van Ness, Ave San Francisco, CA 94103).  However, there may be situations where the incumbent will be required to work at other sites throughout the City of San Francisco as necessary.

The Department offers a hybrid work schedule.

Nature of Work

The incumbent must be willing to work on-site at our San Francisco office in person four days a week and one day remote as determined by the department. Travel within San Francisco may be required.

Incumbent may be required to provide 24-hour on-call support to ensure rapid recovery from software or hardware problems for mission-critical systems and networks.

How to qualify

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, information systems, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in Microsoft Power Apps (canvas and model-driven) and Power Pages development.
  • Experience with Power Automate for building workflows.
  • Proficiency with Dataverse and SharePoint integration.
  • Strong communication, customer service, and time management skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Experience creating technical documentation, including workflow and entity relationship diagrams.
  • Experience with PowerBI, Azure, and Dynamics 365.
  • Programming experience in Python and database development in SQLServer, Snowflake, or other relational databases.
  • Experience with API integration and consumption.
  • Active involvement in community engagements, such as user groups, online forums, or contributions to open-source platforms like GitHub.
  • Experience presenting at conferences, publishing papers, or developing applications available in app stores.

Minimum Qualification Requirements:

Education:  An associate degree in computer science, computer engineering, information systems, or a closely related field from an accredited college or university OR its equivalent in terms of total course credits/units [i.e., at least sixty (60) semester or ninety (90) quarter credits/units with a minimum of twenty (20) semester or thirty (30) quarter credits/units in one of the fields above or a closely-related field].

Experience:  Three (3) years of experience analyzing, installing, configuring, enhancing, and/or maintaining the components of an enterprise network.

Substitution:

Additional experience as described above may be substituted for the required degree on a year-for-year basis (up to a maximum of two (2) years). One (1) year is equivalent to thirty (30) semester units/ forty-five (45) quarter units with a minimum of 10 semester / 15 quarter units in one of the fields above or a closely related field.

Completion of the 1010 Information Systems Trainee Program may be substituted for the required degree.
