Role description
Under general direction, the 7335 class supervises the operation, maintenance and repair activities of a wide variety of pumping, heating, ventilating, air conditioning, refrigeration, and process machinery and equipment in a large complex facility or in a multi-faceted facility. Supervision exercised: Supervision includes local administrative control and work assignments of craft personnel on extended or temporary assignments. Craft general foremen will supervise their respective workmen in those matters pertaining to craft or trade techniques or methods.
7335 Stationary Engineer Essential Duties
According to Civil Service Commission Rule 109, the duties specified below are representative of the range of duties assigned to this job code/class and are not intended to be an inclusive list.
1. Supervises subordinate staff and personally participates in the operation, maintenance and repair of pumping, ventilating and heating equipment, including fans, pumps, air-conditioners and auxiliary equipment; maintains and repairs elevators and specialized kitchen, laboratory and laundry equipment and facilities.
2. Operates and maintains high pressure boilers, fans, pumps, refrigeration equipment, electrical generators, air compressors and various other mechanical and electrical plant machines and equipment; makes periodic inspections and tests of machinery and equipment to assure proper operation and determine the necessity for repair or maintenance; cleans, paints and lubricates plant machinery and equipment, as required; checks and repairs automatic temperature and humidity controls and replaces parts, as necessary; repairs and replaces switches and relays on control panels.
3. Supervises the operation of automatic and manually controlled purification and water treatment equipment, including pumps, motors, chemical feeders and filters to control the quality and regulate the flow of water through a treatment plant; conducts water analysis under general supervision to maintain water quality and proper chemical dosage in filtration plant.
4. Prepares shift schedules and work assignments for subordinate personnel; orders supplies, parts and equipment necessary for operation and maintenance activities; takes, records and computes various meter readings reflecting plant operations; answers emergency calls from various locations or departments in connection with heating and ventilating machinery and equipment breakdowns or malfunctions; makes emergency repairs or alterations in such cases; instructs other operating personnel in the proper operation of boilers, fans, heating equipment and boiler feed water treatment.
Supplemental Information: Essential Functions require considerable physical effort in the maintenance, repair and operation of plant machinery and equipment; the ability to lift heavy objects. Work environment may require exposure to working conditions where minor abrasions, bruises and burns may be encountered; occasional disagreeable work inside close and dirty spaces.
How to qualify
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: These minimum qualifications establish the education, training, experience, special skills and/or license(s) which are required for employment in the classification. Please note, additional qualifications (i.e., special conditions) may apply to a particular position and will be stated on the exam/job announcement.
I. Education: Completion of a recognized four (4) -year Stationary Engineer Apprenticeship program And
II. Experience: One (1) year experience as a journey-level stationary engineer And
III. License and Certification:
• Possession of a current Driver License
• Universal Chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) certificate issued by the Federal Environmental Protection Agency for working with heating and ventilating equipment (HVAC) or other refrigeration equipment using CFCs and HCFCs.
Substitution: Any one of the following may substitute for the required education and experience:
• Five (5) years verifiable experience as a journey-level stationary engineer -or-
• Graduation from recognized four-year Maritime Academy plus one-year verifiable experience as a journey-level stationary engineer -or-
• Possession of at least a 3rd Assistant Marine Engineer's License of any horsepower plus one-year verifiable experience as an unrestricted licensed Marine Engineer for merchant vessels or one-year verifiable experience shore side as a journey-level stationary engineer.

SELECTION PROCEDURES:
I. Qualifying
Application and Preliminary Questionnaire - Complete the application and preliminary questionnaire thoroughly to avoid disqualification. After you complete the application, you will be prompted to complete the preliminary questionnaire.
Minimum Qualification Supplemental Questionnaire (MQSQ) - Candidates whose applications are determined to meet the minimum qualifications, may be required to complete a MQSQ that is designed to obtain specific information regarding an applicant's experience in relation to the Minimum Qualifications (MQ) for this position.
After application information is submitted, candidates deemed qualified must complete all subsequent steps to advance in this selection process, which includes the following:

Exam Component: 7335 Senior Stationary Engineer Core & Supervisory Exam (weight - 100%)
This exam will measure knowledge, skills and abilities that include:
Knowledge of: the methods and procedures necessary to the safe and efficient operation, maintenance and repair of mechanical and electrical plant machines, tools and equipment; a wide variety of pumping, heating, ventilating, air conditioning and process machinery; applicable shop practices and safety regulations.
Ability and Skill to: promote, establish and maintain effective working relationships with subordinate personnel, supervisors and management, and with members of the public, various suppliers, Regulatory Agencies and other City departments; prioritize, plan, assign, direct and inspect the activities of subordinate stationary engineers and craft personnel; operate motor vehicles with both automatic and manual automobile transmissions; clearly and effectively communicate orders and information; read, write and understand reports, memorandum, log information, manuals, blueprints and other written communications regarding plant activities; maintain plant operating records and prepare related reports; operate, repair and maintain a variety of pumping, heating, ventilating and similar type plant machinery and equipment.
Candidates must achieve passing score on the 7335 Senior Stationary Engineer Core & Supervisory Exam in order to be placed/ranked on the eligible list. This is a standardized multiple-choice examination and in accordance with Civil Service Rule 111.11.4, inspection privileges do not apply to the questions and answers in these examinations. The hiring department may administer additional positions-specific selection procedures to make final hiring decisions. Qualified applicants will be notified by email of the exact time and date of the examinations. Requests for an alternate test date may be considered in limited circumstances and must be submitted to the analyst listed in this announcement within five (5) calendar days of the announcement of the test date. Candidate scores on these examinations may also be applied to other announcements involving other job titles, when directed by the Human Resources Director.

Banked Score: The score that you achieve on the 7335 Senior Stationary Engineer Core & Supervisory Exam shall be valid and "banked" for three years, starting from the date you take the examination. This means that, during this three-year time period, you will not be required to take this test again should you apply and be found eligible for a future announcement for which this particular test is used. If the test for a future announcement is held within 1 year of the date of this examination, your score will be automatically applied to that announcement. However, after 1 year, you have the option to either (a) apply your test score to the other announcement or (b) re-take the test. Re-testing is permitted no sooner than twelve months from the date you last took the examination and only in association with your eligibility for another announcement for which this test is used. Please note that, should you re-test, your re-test score would become your official score going forward since it is the most recent. If the exam is modified, your “banked” scores may no longer be valid. In such circumstance, candidates with “banked” scores would be required to re-take the exam sooner than the three-year period specified above.
Eligible List/Score Report: A confidential eligible list of applicant names that have passed the civil service examination process will be created and used for certification purposes only. An examination score report will be established, so applicants can view the ranks, final scores, and number of eligible candidates. Applicant information, including names of applicants on the eligible list, shall not be made public unless required by law. However, an eligible list shall be made available for public inspection, upon request, once the eligible list is exhausted or expired and referrals are resolved. The eligible list/score report resulting from this civil service examination process is subject to change after adoption (e.g., as a result of appeals), as directed by the Human Resources Director or the Civil Service Commission. The duration of the eligible list resulting from this examination process will be 6 months and may be extended with the approval of the Human Resources Director.

The 7335 class is utilized by several departments in the City and County of San Francisco. Below are some specific departmental requirements.
Transportation Security Administration (TSA) Security Clearance: Candidates for employment with the San Francisco Airport Commission are required to undergo a criminal history record check, including FBI fingerprints, and Security Threat Assessment in order to determine eligibility for security clearance and may be required to undergo drug/alcohol screening. Per Civil Service Commission Rule Section 110.9.1, every applicant for an examination must possess and maintain the qualifications required by law and by the examination announcement for the examination. Failure to obtain and maintain security clearance may be basis for termination from employment with the Airport Commission.
Customs Clearance: This position may require that the incumbent be qualified for unescorted access to the San Francisco International Airport U.S. Customs Security Area. An application for a U.S. Custom Access Seal may be submitted to Customs ONLY after employment has commenced. Employment in this position requires that the incumbent submit an application for, successfully acquire and maintain a Customs Access Seal. Per Civil Service Commission Rule 110.9.1, every applicant must possess and maintain the qualifications required by law and by the examination announcement for this examination. Failure to acquire or maintain customs access, a requirement for this position, may be basis for termination from employment with the Airport Commission. TWIC Cards: This position may require that the incumbent to be qualified for unescorted access to the Port’s Maritime Transportation System (MTS). Employment in this position requires that the incumbent undergo a criminal history check, immigration check and terrorist threat assessment, including FBI fingerprints, in order to determine eligibility for security clearance. The incumbent must submit an application to successfully acquire and maintain a TWIC card. Per Civil Service Rule 110.9.1, every applicant must possess and maintain the qualifications required by law and by the announcement for this examination. Failure to acquire or maintain a TWIC card, a requirement for this position, may be the basis for termination from employment with the Port Commission.
