Developed and operated by the Office of Civic Engagement & Immigrant Affairs (OCEIA), the Community Ambassadors Program (CAP) is a community safety and neighborhood engagement job training program. CAP hires and trains San Francisco residents to engage, inform and assist community members and to provide a visible, non-law enforcement safety presence in specific areas - all while providing valuable work experience, skill building and professional growth to help prepare ambassadors for their next career opportunity. Community Ambassadors work in diverse neighborhoods to promote safety and connect people to services. Ambassadors help San Franciscans that are low-income, experiencing homelessness, speak a language other than English, older adults, and more.
While part of this job training program, ambassadors work in teams to:
- Provide safety escorts for residents, workers and tourists in specific neighborhoods and areas
- Report emergencies and contact medical and emergency services for community members in crisis
- Report safety hazards, street cleanliness, graffiti and other issues to SF 311 and City departments
- Conduct wellness checks and check on individuals in public spaces that may need support
- Provide referrals and link community members to available social services
- Conduct outreach and educate and inform the public about City services and programs
Role description
The 1840 Professional Development Coordinator will support the professional development of community ambassadors and to develop and coordinate a plan to strengthen the workforce development aspects of the program. This position will interact daily with the Ambassadors and will provide individualized guidance, planning and technical assistance to ambassadors, while also helping to craft, build and improve a broader professional development strategy for the program. The ideal candidate is committed to serving the public, particularly underserved vulnerable communities; has strong leadership skills; and is goal-oriented positive role model and motivator for others.
Essential Functions
- Coordinate, refresh and implement the CAP Training & Professional Development Program
- Support Operations Team with recruitment, training and professional development of new Ambassadors
- Facilitate or co-facilitate internal trainings and educational sessions on basic professional skills for ambassadors
- Research and coordinate external trainings and educational opportunities for ambassadors
- Develop and track professional develop metrics for ambassadors and program; compile summary data and reports regarding professional development outcomes per participant and in aggregate
- Develop partnerships and collaborations with other workforce development organizations or programs to enhance ambassador skills and opportunities
- Provide individualized professional development support to ambassador participants, including crafting personal career and skill building plans, and technical assistance navigating computer-based skill building tools and opportunities.
- Provide general administrative support to the program under direction of the program manager, including meeting and event support, general administrative support, and team planning
How to qualify
Possession of a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in public or business administration, accounting, finance, economics, social sciences, education, or related field, or other areas closely related to specific department program or function.
Substitution: May substitute up to two (2) years of the required education with additional qualifying experience in program/office/operations management, budget development and/or administration, or contract/grant administration. One year (2000 hours) of additional qualifying experience will be considered equivalent to 30 semester units/45 quarter units.
Desirable Qualifications
- Strong and professional interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills, especially with diverse and underserved populations
- Ability and experience in leading educational and/or training sessions to diverse populations
- Familiarity and interest in workforce development and professional development programs
- Strong organizational and time management skills
- Ability to multi-task and complete simple, time-sensitive tasks with high quality
- Attention to details and ability to accurately record and maintain records
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) and google platform tools (forms, surveys, calendar, etc); basic familiarity with Tableau also preferred (though not required)
- Self-starter who can work independently or collaboratively
- Ability to stay calm and remain effective in high pressure situations
- Experience in providing clerical support and customer service in a professional office setting
- Experience working hands-on with diverse and underserved populations;
- Experience providing program and clerical support; ideally within a workforce development or job training context;
- Experience in workforce development, community outreach or neighborhood safety initiatives and professional development programs
- Knowledge of and experience in trauma-informed practices and conflict resolution for supporting professional and personal development of staff from diverse backgrounds
- Knowledge of and experience conducting outreach and education with immigrant, low-income and underserved communities in San Francisco; knowledge of community resources and social services
- Ability to manage complex and multi-functional projects
- Ability to work in a collaborative, fast-paced and busy environment
- Ability to collaborate, engage and influence community stakeholders including nonprofit partners, community groups and city department partners
- Excellent oral/written communications skills
- Ability to multi-task and complete complex, time-sensitive project management tasks with high quality and attention to details
- Willingness to work outdoors in the field to support team operations, and to occasionally work flexible schedule to support field operations when needed
- Experience providing training or instruction to others
- Experience working in public eye with diverse and limited-English proficient communities

Compensation: $76,934 - $93,548 annually
