The San Francisco Department of Public Health is accepting applications for a temporary exempt Chief Communications Officer (0932 Manager IV), Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center.
Role description
POSITION DESCRIPTION:
The Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital (ZSFGH) Chief Communications Officer (0932 Manager IV) is responsible for all public affairs functions and activities including internal and external communications, community relations, media relations, public relations, and website content for ZSFG. It will have dual-reporting relationships to the ZSFG Chief Executive Officer and the Director of Public Affairs. Responsibilities include oversight of the Communications Department, directing and coordinating policy development and providing leadership and direction in developing new public affairs programs and establishing organizational policies, priorities, and objectives, and directing critical ZSFGH communications strategies and decisions that impact hospitals across the Bay Area. The Chief Communications Officer will advise, coach, and train hospital administrative and clinical leadership on public affairs, communications, and message development and maintain a close working relationship with the ZSFGH Foundation to align public relations efforts, collaborating on numerous events, campaigns, and activities. The Chief Communications Officer serves as the ZSFGH spokesperson, representative, and liaison to the Mayor's office, Department of Emergency Management, federal, state, and affiliate agencies, and all public information and media relations offices and plans, organizes, and directs all public and media events for ZSFGH.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
The ZSFGH Chief Communications Officer (0932 Manager IV) performs the following essential job functions:
- Develops and implements a long-term and short-term communications strategy for ZSFGH
- Manages reputational issues and crisis communications plans for ZSFGH, a 4,000 FTE Level One Trauma Center
- Develops proactive and reactive media strategies for ZSFGH
- Manages, mentors, and guides the ZSFGH Communications team
- Creates and implements ZSFGH public campaigns with impacts across San Francisco and the broader Bay Area
- Executes and manages internal and leadership messaging and communications for ZSFGH
The ZSFGH Chief Communications Officer (0932 Manager IV) performs other duties as required and assigned.
How to qualify
Required Minimum Qualifications (all candidates are required to provide verification that they meet ALL of the following required minimum qualifications--#1 and #2 OR #3 and #4):
1. Education: Possession of a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university;
AND
2. Experience: Seven (7) years of verifiable work experience within the last ten (10) years in public relations, communications, and/or journalism covering areas including healthcare policy, hospital administration, or health systems.
OR
3. Education: Possession of a master’s degree from an accredited college or university;
AND
4. Experience: Five (5) years of verifiable work experience within the last ten (10) years in public relations, communications, and/or journalism covering areas including healthcare policy, hospital administration, or health systems.
Note: One year of full-time employment is equivalent to 2,000 hours of qualifying work experience (one year if performed full-time at 40 hours per week). Any overtime hours that were worked above 40 hours per week are not included in the calculation to determine qualifying hours worked.

Note on Personal Protective Equipment (PPE):
Some positions in the Department of Public Health will require the use of personal protective equipment (PPE), including but not limited to gloves, gowns, eye and face protection, and face-fitting respirators. The requirement for the use of PPE may come on short or no notice. Facial hair or any condition that interferes with a face-fitting respirator’s seal (i.e. comes between the sealing surfaces of the respirator and the wearer’s bare skin) is not permitted when face-fitting respirators are worn, including during initial or periodic respirator fit-testing. Employees who choose not to shave and do not have either American Disabilities Act (ADA) or Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) Accommodations do not have the right to alternate work assignments or the option of using a loose-fitting Powered Air Purifying Respirator(PAPR) in place of a Face Fitting Respirator.
Medical Examination/Drug Testing:
Prior to appointment, at the Department's expense, applicants may be required to take a tuberculosis (TB) screening test, a medical examination and/or drug test.
