About:
The Mission of the San Francisco Department of Public Health (SFDPH) is to protect and promote the health of all San Franciscans. SFDPH strives to achieve its mission through the work of two main Divisions - the San Francisco Health Network and Population Health.
The San Francisco Health Network is the City's only complete system of care and has locations throughout the City, including Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center, Laguna Honda Hospital and Rehabilitation Center, and over 15 primary care health centers.

Role description
Under general direction, the Medical Social Work Supervisor recruits, orients, trains, supervises and evaluates staff; prepares work schedules and individual assignments for social work staff; provides consultation concerning the most difficult cases; performs individual therapy and group therapy; coordinates a medical social services program; performs administrative duties; participates in hospital committees and community and professional organizations; prepares data and statistics; and performs related duties as required.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
- Supervises assigned personnel which may include class 2922 Senior Medical Social Workers and class 2920 Medical Social Workers and other ancillary staff; provides consultation concerning the most difficult cases.
- Prepares work schedule and assignments for medical social work staff; confers with individual staff members on specific duties; reviews important and difficult cases to check eligibility; reviews other cases for specific reasons.
- Gives advice and makes administrative decisions to Medical Social Workers.
- Coordinates Medical Social Services Program; acts as liaison between medical social service staff and various hospital departments, personnel and community agencies.
- As part of an interdisciplinary team, participates in the preparation and maintenance of individual case records; prepares or supervises the preparation of periodic performance reports and related statistics.
- Interprets medical policies and procedures to Social Workers and medical vendors.
- Performs as the departmental representative and takes a leadership role at conferences, workshops, seminars, regional committees and related meetings.
- Performs related duties and responsibilities as assigned.
How to qualify
Applicants must meet the minimum qualification requirement by the final filing date unless otherwise noted.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Experience: Four (4) years of post-Master’s Medical Social Worker experience in a health care setting where:
- ONE (1) year of the required years must include supervisory experience; and
- at least THREE (3) years of the required experience must be in a home health setting.
AND
License and Certification: Current licensure as a Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) issued by the State of California Board of Behavioral Sciences as required under Title 22, California Administrative Code, Section 70055.
One year of full-time employment is equivalent to 2000 hours. (2000 hours of qualifying work experience is based on a 40 hours work week.) Any overtime hours that you work above forty (40) hours per week are not included in the calculation to determine full-time employment.
Valid licensure must be kept current throughout the length of employment. Failure to
demonstrate/show proof of possession of required valid licensure may result in dismissal
and/or termination of employment.

SELECTION PROCEDURES
Minimum Qualification Supplemental Questionnaire (Weight: Qualifying): Applicants will be prompted to complete a Supplemental Questionnaire as part of the online employment application. This Minimum Qualification Supplemental Questionnaire is designed to obtain specific information regarding an applicant's experience in relation to the Minimum Qualifications for this position. Applicants must also complete the official application. It is essential that applicants provide complete information in identifying their education, experience and training. The Minimum Qualification Supplemental Questionnaire will be used to evaluate if the applicant possesses the required minimum qualifications.
Training and Experience Evaluation (Weight- 100%): Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will be emailed a Training and Experience Evaluation that is designed to measure knowledge, skills, and/or abilities in job-related areas which may include, but not be limited to:
- Knowledge of social work theories, principles, and practices; Knowledge of Federal, State, and local laws, administrative codes, rules and regulations; Ability to train and supervise others; establish and maintain effective professional relationships; prepare work schedules and assignments to Medical Social Workers and staff; make decisions; prioritize activities; use initiative and act independently; Ability to be sensitive to cultural diversity; Written communication skills; Problem Solving Skills.
The Training and Experience Evaluation will be emailed to the address listed on the applicants online application. Applicants will be required to respond to the Training and Experience Evaluation in the time frame indicated and must submit the completed questionnaire as directed in order to have it evaluated. Responses cannot be changed once submitted. Applicants will be evaluated based on their Training and Experience Evaluation responses.
Applicants must achieve a passing score on the Training and Experience Evaluation in order to be ranked on the eligible list/score report. Successful applicants will be placed on the eligible list/score report, in rank order, according to their final score.
After the eligible list/score report is finalized/adopted: The department may administer additional selection procedures to make a final hiring decision (e.g. interviews, written exercises, etc.)

Certification: The certification rule for the eligible list resulting from this examination will be Rule of Three Scores. Additional selection processes may be conducted by the hiring
department prior to making final hiring decisions.
Eligible List/Score Report: A confidential eligible list of applicant names that have passed the civil service examination process will be created, and used for certification purposes only. An examination score report will be established, so applicants can view the ranks, final scores and number of eligible candidates. Applicant information, including names of applicants on the eligible list, shall not be made public unless required by law. However, an eligible list shall be made available for public inspection, upon request, once the eligible list is exhausted or expired and referrals resolved. The eligible list/score report resulting from this civil service examination process is subject to change after adoption (e.g., as a result of appeals), as directed by the Human Resources Director or the Civil Service Commission.
The duration of the eligible list resulting from this examination process will be 6 months, and may be extended with the approval of the Human Resources Director. Upon approval of the Human Resource Director (see Civil Service Rule 111A.26.5), the eligible list/score report resulting from this announcement may be used by other departments that also use this classification or a similar classification.
