Role description

Under general supervision, performs a variety of manual and general labor tasks in connection with the operation and maintenance of institutional buildings and grounds, and performs other related duties as required. The essential functions of this class include: consolidating and loading refuse onto trucks for removal or transportation to disposal sites; performing minor repairs to mechanical and hospital equipment; performing general maintenance duties; operating a motor vehicle while transporting various items; assisting others in daily tasks; assisting in identifying health and safety issues; and assisting in the reconfiguration of work areas.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND FUNCTIONS

According to Civil Service Commission Rule 109, the duties specified below are representative of the range of duties assigned to this job class and are not intended to be an inclusive list; may include additional duties as assigned.

1.       Cleans and removes debris around buildings and grounds; consolidates and loads refuse onto trucks for transport to disposal site, or into dumpsters for removal. Makes contact with appropriate vendors, such as recycling, garbage, and non-profit agencies for recycle, reuse, or refurbish.

2.       Operates a motor vehicle while transporting a variety of items which include money, refuse, donations, equipment, furniture, food, medical related items, and interdepartmental forms of communication. This includes items for pick-up and/or delivery. May operate a motor vehicle in the transfer of employees and/or patients.

3.       Performs minor repairs on plumbing and kitchen equipment such as garbage disposals and grills; performs minor automotive repair and minor carpentry; and may complete other minor repair tasks, such as installation of work cubicles and hardware.

4.       Performs general maintenance and labor tasks within the buildings including emergency cleaning and replacing light bulbs.

5.       Assists the engineering staff and/or electricians in the performance of their duties, which may include the HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) system.

6.       Assists others in daily tasks.

7.       Assists in building inspections by participating in the walk through to identify health and safety issues.

8.       Assists in setting up or rearranging meeting rooms and the reconfiguration of work areas.

Performs related duties and responsibilities as assigned.

How to qualify

A minimum of one year as a Category 18 exempt appointee in Class 1950 by December 15, 2022. Must be a current exempt employee with the City and County of San Francisco with no break in service.

 

Underlying Minimum Qualifications

1.       Experience: One year of experience in the maintenance of buildings and grounds; OR

Six months experience in Class 7524 Institutional Utility Worker;

AND

2.       License: Possession of a valid Class C driver license (attach a copy to the application)

Essential duties require the following physical skills and work environment: the ability to drive to various work related sites; to work occasionally on weekends and nights; and may involve some dirty and disagreeable work conditions such as tight crawl spaces with hot steam pipes. Employees will be required to lift 50 - 70 pounds depending upon the position.

Candidates being offered a permanent appointment will be required to submit verification of having met the underlying minimum qualifications [education and experience] at the time of appointment to the exempt position. Selection Procedures:

Qualified applicants will be ranked on an eligible list according to length of Cat 18 exempt City service and any other qualifying points such as promotive or Veteran’s Preference in accordance with CSC rules. Work history will be verified through City records which will be the final authority.

What else should I know?

A confidential eligible list of qualifying candidates will be created and used for certification purposes only. A score report will be established, so applicants can view the ranks, final scores and number of eligible candidates. Applicant information, including names of applicants on the eligible list, shall not be made public unless required by law. However, an eligible list shall be made available for public inspection upon request once the eligible list is exhausted or expired and referrals resolved. The eligible list/score report resulting from this selection process is subject to change after adoption (e.g., because of appeals), as directed by the Human Resources Director or the Civil Service Commission. The duration of the eligible list resulting from this examination process will be 12 months. For those candidates that do not have their qualifying 12 months at the time of eligible list posting, you will be placed under waiver on the eligible list and not available for appointment until you qualify. For example, if you were appointed to your Cat 18 position in November, 2021, you would be under waiver until November 2022.
