The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco

The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco are the city's largest public arts institutions and are comprised of the de Young and the Legion of Honor museums. The de Young, designed by Herzog & de Meuron and located in Golden Gate Park, showcases American art from the 17th through the 21st centuries, international contemporary art, textiles and costumes, and art from the Americas, the Pacific, and Africa. The Legion of Honor displays a collection of over 4,000 years of ancient and European art including Auguste Rodin's The Thinker and houses the Achenbach Foundation for Graphic Arts in a Beaux-Arts style building overlooking Lincoln Park and the Golden Gate Bridge. The staff, the Board of Trustees, the volunteers, and various support groups are continuously working together to ensure the optimal utilization, display, preservation, and enrichment of this magnificent collection. Role description

Appointment Type: The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco are seeking to fill two (2) full-time Temporary Provisional Security Guard positions. In order for a provisional appointee to be able to retain their job, they must apply to compete for a permanent civil service appointment when the job announcement is issued.  Provisional appointees must go through the permanent civil service job application process in order to become a Permanent employee. Provisional employees are not guaranteed permanent selection.

Nature of Work:  Incumbents may be assigned to work Day, Swing & Graveyard Shifts as well as inverse and holdover shifts as required.  Incumbents may be called for special events and additional shift assignments. Incumbents will be assigned to shifts at the de Young Museum (50 Hagiwara Tea Garden Dr, San Francisco, CA 94118) or the Legion of Honor (100 34th Ave, San Francisco, CA 94121).

POSITION DESCRIPTION

Under general supervision, patrols public buildings and grounds to safeguard property against damage, hazardous situations or unauthorized entry; and performs related duties as required.  Requires responsibility for: enforcing rules and regulations governing the access to and use of public facilities; preparing routine reports of time and work done; making routine contact with the general public and operation personnel in the patrolling and safeguarding of public facilities; observing and being aware of the surrounding environment and recognizing potentially dangerous situations and reacting appropriately.

TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Patrols grounds or makes rounds of buildings, punching in on watchman’s clock at various stations;  prevents the entry of unauthorized persons on premises; Watches for fire or fire hazards or other unusual conditions; Checks to see if windows and doors are locked and lights turned out; May perform part-time incidental duties such as: operate elevator, relieve on switchboard and perform minor maintenance and cleanup tasks.

How to qualify

  1. One year of verifiable experience as a security officer;  AND  
  2. Possession of a current California Security Guard Registration Card issued by the California State Bureau of Security and Investigative Services;  AND
  3. Possession of a High School Diploma or G.E.D. Certificate.

License and Certification: Requires possession of a valid state motor vehicle operator's license.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS: The stated desirable qualifications may be used to identify job finalists at the end of the selection process for hiring.

1.  Experience working in a museum or at a cultural institution.

2.  Experience with the requirements for working near high value art or around fragile and/or valuable materials.

3. Ability to interact with the public and customers in a professional manner.

Security Guard (Class Code 8202) -Compensation/Pay Rates

CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT:  All City and County of San Francisco employees are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 as a condition of employment.
