About:

The Mission of the San Francisco Department of Public Health (SFDPH) is to protect and promote the health of all San Franciscans. SFDPH strives to achieve its mission through the work of two main Divisions - the San Francisco Health Network and Population Health.

The San Francisco Health Network is the City's only complete system of care and has locations throughout the City, including Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center, Laguna Honda Hospital and Rehabilitation Center, and over 15 primary care health centers.

The Perioperative Department of Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital (ZSFG) consists of 12 operating suites, 2 interventional radiology suites, a Cardiac Cath Suite, a pre-operative preparation area, a post-operative recovery area, a GI area with 4 GI suites, and an ERCP suite. A staffed operating suite is available for the critically injured trauma patient 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Elective surgery is performed between 7:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. with trauma and/or emergency surgery performed on an as-needed basis. On average, the Operating Room (OR) performs 600 procedures per month. ZSFG has a full service OR excluding only elective open heart and organ transplant surgery. The unit provides services for patients of all ages from neonate through elderly.

The list resulting from this recruitment may be used to fill Nurse Anesthetist positions for the next six months.

Shift: Varied. Days, evening, nights, weekends and/or holiday shifts may be required, depending on position.

Role description

Under general supervision, administers various types of anesthesia to render patients insensitive to pain during operations, deliveries and other therapeutic and diagnostic measures; observes anesthetized patients for adverse reactions and takes remedial action; and maintains records of anesthesia administered and condition of patient prior to and throughout anesthesia.

The Nurse Anesthetist requires responsibility for: carrying out established methods and procedures in administering anesthetics; achieving moderate economies and/or preventing moderate losses through efficient handling of equipment, materials and supplies; making responsible contacts with physicians, surgeons and nursing staff on specialized matters; preparing detailed medical and technical records relative to anesthetics administered and patients’ reactions.  The nature of work involves sustained physical effort and manual dexterity with some exposure to health and accident hazards and disagreeable elements.

Essential duties include:

  • Administers various types of anesthetics by inhalation, intravenous injection, epidural, spinal and block methods;
  • Checks anesthesia machines to assure proper working order; checks resuscitation equipment;
  • Orders, assembles and sterilizes all special equipment used in connection with administration of anesthetics for special types of surgery; orders all drugs used in anesthesia procedures; checks all narcotics used in surgery by surgical staff;
  • Directs the preparation of all spinal and epidural sets for sterilization;
  • When patient arrives in surgery: checks patient; evaluates pre-operative condition; makes entries in anesthesia record; administers various drugs with oxygen, as necessary for each particular operation; gives blood transfusion to replace loss due to operating procedures; checks blood pressure, pulse and respiration frequency; discontinues anesthesia at conclusion of operation; AND
  • Accompanies patient to recovery room and reports condition to recovery room nurse.

The Nurse Anesthetist performs other related duties as assigned.

How to qualify

1. LICENSE: Possession of a valid permanent/temporary (including interim permit) California Registered Nurse License; AND

2. CERTIFICATION: Valid certification as a Registered Nurse Anesthetist in the State of California.

What else should I know?

Minimum Qualification Supplemental Questionnaire (MQSQ) (Weight: Qualifying): Candidates will be required to submit an MQSQ at any point in the application, examination or departmental selection process.  Applicants must also complete the Preliminary Questions.  This MQSQ is designed to obtain specific information regarding an applicant's experience in relation to the Minimum Qualifications for this position. Applicants must also complete the official application. It is essential that applicants provide complete information in identifying their education, experience and training. The MQSQ will be used to evaluate if the applicant possesses the required minimum qualifications.  Please provide proof of your licenses and certifications by uploading them to your application.

Training and Experience Evaluation/Supplemental Questionnaire (SQ) (Weight: 100%): The SQ will be sent to those qualified candidates who demonstrate they meet the minimum qualifications. Candidates will be required to submit the completed SQ in the time frame indicated and responses on the SQ cannot be changed once submitted. A passing score must be achieved on the SQ in order to be placed/ranked on the Eligible List.  Candidates will be placed in rank order according to their final score on the SQ.  After the confidential eligible list/score report is adopted, the department may administer additional selection procedures to make a final hiring decision. The SQ is designed to measure knowledge, skills and/or abilities in job-related areas that have been identified as critical for satisfactory performance in this position. All relevant experience, education and/or training must be included in the application to be reviewed during the scoring process. The department may administer additional position-specific selection procedures to make final hiring decisions.

Eligible List Duration: The list resulting from this examination process will be 6 months.
Certification Rule for the eligible list resulting from this examination will be Rule of Ten Scores.
