5381 - Intern Qualification: College junior or higher. 

The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA or “the agency”) connects San Franciscans with their communities to enhance the economy, environment and, ultimately, the quality of life in the city. As an agency within the City and County of San Francisco, the SFMTA is responsible for managing the city’s transportation network. The agency has more than 6,000 employees who are responsible for the management of all ground and some underground transportation in the city. The SFMTA has oversight over public transit, as well as bicycling, paratransit, parking and curb management, street operations, walking, and taxis.

The SFMTA MOW-Mechanical Systems Program is a maintenance and engineering team responsible for Cable Car engineering, Subway Facilities maintenance, Agency-wide vertical transportation equipment (elevators and escalators) and Underground and Aboveground storage tank systems. We are a dynamic and collaborative team that works together in a wide range of system up-keep and maintenance related tasks from routine preventative maintenance, special projects and serving as subject matter experts for large scale, capital level projects. Our group is comprised of a wide cross section of backgrounds including laborers, stationary engineers, electricians, sheet metal workers, inspectors, engineers and other trades. 

Role description

Under supervision, the intern performs entry-level Mechanical engineering and project support work for the MOW-Mechanical Systems Program. The successful candidate will assist the Engineer and work closely with other staff including a wide array of trades and administrative staff by providing engineering support and analysis on a variety of projects involving Cable Car systems, storage tank systems, elevator/escalator systems and a variety of other transportation infrastructure. The intern will work closely with all MSP staff on a daily basis.

This internship is meant to be an immersive experience drawing heavily on the candidate's education and engineering knowledge but will push the chosen candidate to apply those skills in the “real world” and successfully interact with his/her peers and coworkers. We hope to provide an excellent opportunity for the intern to learn about the MTA on a number of operational levels and test themselves and their skills in applied and tangible situations. 

How to qualify

Desired qualifications:
•    College Major: Mechanical Engineering, 3rd year (junior or above) preferred; 2nd year with related work experience will be considered
•    Desired Skills: 
     o    Academic knowledge or practical experience of mechanical systems such as engines, motors, gearboxes, pumps, fans, piping, ducting, seals, drives and basic understanding of electrical and control systems
     o    Academic knowledge or practical experience with Underground and Aboveground Storage Tank Systems, components, compliance requirements, function and best practices
     o    Academic knowledge or practical experience with basic manufacturing, machining, and welding
     o    Academic knowledge or practical experience with CAD software, AutoCad, Solidworks, etc.
     o    Strong basic computer skills, MS-Office, email, etc.

Interns follow the same telecommuting requirements as all City employees, with a requirement to work onsite at least three days per week (subject to change). Work at the office, fieldwork, outreach events, and field trips all count toward the onsite work requirement.

Intern salaries:  $35.75/hr

Interns will also have free access to Muni for the duration of their internship.

CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT:  All City and County of San Francisco employees are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 as a condition of employment.
