About:

The San Francisco Department of Public Health (DPH) is accepting applications for Nurse Practitioner (Adult) positions (Class 2328).  Positions may be located throughout the San Francisco Department of Public Health, including, but not limited to Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center (ZSFG), Laguna Honda Hospital and Rehabilitation Center (LHH), and San Francisco Health Network (SFHN) clinics located throughout San Francisco.

Role description

GENERAL JOB DESCRIPTION: Under general nursing and medical direction, utilizing standardized procedures, the Nurse Practitioner functions within an organized system for the delivery of health care in association with other members of the multidisciplinary health care team and performs specialized nurse practitioner duties in clinical settings. 

Essential duties include but are not limited to all or some of the following:

  1. Manages patient care within the field of specialization;
  2. Provides health education and counseling to patients;
  3. Maintains medical records; AND
  4. Participates in nursing/clinic staff meetings and conferences.

The 2328 Nurse Practitioner - Adult Specialty performs other duties as assigned/required.

How to qualify

  1. LICENSE: Possession of a valid permanent/temporary California license as a Registered Nurse issued by the California Board of Registered Nursing; AND
  2. LICENSE: Possession of a valid California Nurse Practitioner (NP) license issued by the California Board of Registered Nursing; AND
  3. LICENSE: Possession of a current medication furnishing license issued by the California Board of Registered Nurses; AND 
  4. EDUCATION: Possession of a Master’s Degree in Nursing (MSN) or higher from an accredited college or university; AND 
  5. SPECIALTY AREA REQUIREMENTS: (Adult)
    • Specialization as a Family NP, Adult NP, Adult Gerontology NP, Adult-Gerontology Acute Care NP; or Acute Care NP;AND​​​​
  6. CERTIFICATION: Possession of national board certification, or eligibility, as a Nurse Practitioner issued by one of the following recognized national certifying body or organization:

Special Conditions: Some positions may require special conditions, including but not limited to Bilingual Proficiency: Some positions may require bilingual fluency in a variety of languages depending upon the department's bilingual needs. Desirable Qualifications: The following desirable qualifications are applicable to NP Adult positions as described below.

Adult Medicine NP positions working on the Inpatient Medical-Surgical Units 

  1. Two years of Inpatient experience as an RN in an acute care hospital and Adult NP, Family NP or Acute Care NP certification OR
  2. Two years of Acute Care NP experience including Adult Medicine or Emergency Department experience

Inpatient Orthopedic NP positions working on the Inpatient Orthopedic Team 

  1. Inpatient NP Orthopedic experience 
  2. Outpatient NP in an Orthopedic Clinic

Minimum Qualification Supplemental Questionnaire (MQSQ) (Weight: Qualifying): Candidates who meet minimum qualifications will be invited via a separate link to complete the MQSQ as part of the online employment application.  This MQSQ is designed to obtain specific information regarding an applicant's experience in relation to the Minimum Qualifications for this position. Applicants must also complete the official application. It is essential that applicants provide complete information in identifying their education, experience and training. Training and Experience Evaluation/Supplemental Questionnaire (SQ) (Weight: 100%): The SQ will be sent to those qualified candidates who demonstrate they meet the minimum qualifications. Candidates will be required to submit the completed SQ in the time frame indicated and responses on the SQ cannot be changed once submitted. A passing score must be achieved on the SQ in order to be placed/ranked on the Eligible List.  Candidates will be placed in rank order according to their final score on the SQ.  After the confidential eligible list/score report is adopted, the department may administer additional selection procedures to make a final hiring decision. The SQ is designed to measure knowledge, skills and/or abilities in job-related areas that have been identified as critical for satisfactory performance in this position. All relevant experience, education and/or training must be included in the application to be reviewed during the scoring process. The department may administer additional position-specific selection procedures to make final hiring decisions.

Eligible List Duration: The list resulting from this examination process will be 6 months.
Certification Rule for the eligible list resulting from this examination will be Rule of Ten Scores.

  1. Licensure/Certification/Registration: Valid licensure/certification/registration as a requirement to perform this job must be kept current throughout length of employment. Failure to demonstrate/show proof of possession of required valid licensure/certification/registration may result in dismissal and/or termination of employment. Valid Licensure: If appointed, eligibles possessing interim permits or temporary Licenses must present full and unrestricted Licenses prior to completion of the probationary period.

  3. Note on Electronic Health Record (EHR): The Department of Public Health (DPH) is implementing a unified Electronic Health Record (EHR) system and DPH employees must demonstrate competency in the use of the system that is appropriate for their classification as a condition of employment.  
  4. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Some positions in the Department of Public Health will require the use of personal protective equipment (PPE), including but not limited to gloves, gowns, eye and face protection, and face-fitting respirators. The requirement for the use of PPE may come on short or no notice. Facial hair or any condition that interferes with a face-fitting respirator’s seal (i.e. comes between the sealing surfaces of the respirator and the wearer’s bare skin) is not permitted when face-fitting respirators are worn, including during initial or periodic respirator fit-testing. Employees who choose not to shave and do not have either American Disabilities Act (ADA) or Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) Accommodations do not have the right to alternate work assignments or the option of using a loose-fitting Powered Air Purifying Respirator (PAPR) in place of a Face Fitting Respirator.  
  5. Medical Examination/Drug Testing: Prior to appointment, at the Department's expense, applicants may be required to take a tuberculosis (TB) screening test, a medical examination and/or drug test.
