Role description

Under direction, is responsible for the immediate supervision of the activities of the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) transit revenue collection, processing and reconciliation operation.  Supervises and performs the collection, safeguarding, and transportation of transit fare revenue from various locations to the revenue processing center; the processing, balancing, reconciliation, and accounting of revenue and the preparation of accounting reports which pertain to revenues and materials; the sale, distribution and collection of revenue from fare media. Performs other related duties as required.

Examples of Important and Essential Duties

According to Civil Service Commission Rule 409, the duties specified below are representative of the range of duties assigned to this job code/class and are not intended to be an inclusive list.

1. Supervises and performs the collection of revenue from revenue sources in various locations, using a variety of equipment; this includes revenue processing, balancing, reconciliation, and accounting as well as selling, packaging, distributing, and collecting revenue from fare media.

 2. Purchases, controls and maintains inventory records of fare media, coins/tokens, related revenue items, keys, materials, supplies, and equipment.

3. Prepares written reports which pertain to the auditing, analyzing and controlling of revenues, equipment and materials, or of unusual circumstances/incidents, using computers and other office machines.

4. Assists in development of security procedures; ensures that all security procedures/controls related to the collection, transportation, tally and accounting of revenues are in effect.

5. Supervises use and maintenance of, and makes minor adjustments to, revenue equipment as needed, using various tools and machinery.

6. Performs liaison activities with personnel from other offices, departments, contractors, vendors, and the general public.

7. Performs personnel-related functions as required, including payroll reporting, scheduling, supervising of assigned office and field staff, training new personnel in proper unit procedure and use of equipment, and participating in the performance planning and review process.

8. Drives/operates various vehicles, such as vans, trucks and forklifts for the transportation of transit materials and revenues collected.

9.  Supervises and performs the receipt, intake, labeling and inventorying of lost and found items in order to report updates to 311, log inventory, match items to owners and transfer items to Customer Service Center; supervises and performs the disposal of unmatched items.

10.  Provides customer service to members of the public in an effort to effectively communicate information regarding fare media sales, lost and found items, and other miscellaneous SFMTA information.

11. May include additional duties as assigned.

How to qualify

Qualifications

1. Four (4) years of verifiable full-time experience within the last five (5) years in the daily collection, processing and balancing of large amounts of cash; OR

2. Two years of experience in class 9110 Fare Collections Receiver with the City & County of San Francisco; AND

3. Possession of a valid High School Diploma, GED or California High School Proficiency Certificate; AND

4. Possession of a valid driver license at the time of appointment.

Substitution:  Completion of two (2) years (60 semester units or 90 quarter units) of education from an accredited college or university may be substituted for up to one (1) year of the required experience as indicated in Minimum Qualification #1. This substitution may not be applied to Minimum Qualification #2.

One year of full-time employment is equivalent to 2000 hours. (2000 hours of qualifying work experience is based on a 40-hour work week.) Any overtime hours that you work above forty (40) hours per week are not included in the automatic calculation to determine full-time employment.

Note: Must be bondable.

Nature of work requires working in a 24-hours-a-day/7-days-a-week, indoor/outdoor operation with rotating, holiday, and/or weekend shifts.  May be required to work in a room with closed circuit television and wear a smock; work outdoors in inclement weather; may be exposed to high noise levels, dust and diesel fumes.  Must be able to lift and carry revenue containers weighing up to 75 pounds onto a movable cart and push cart approximately one city block.  Must drive/operate a variety of vehicles involved in the collection and transport of revenue from various locations.

Selection Procedures

After application submission, candidates deemed qualified must complete all subsequent steps to advance in this selection process, which includes the following:

Minimum Qualification Supplemental Questionnaire (MQSQ): Candidates will be required to complete a MQSQ as part of the employment application. This MQSQ is designed to obtain specific information regarding an applicant's experience in relation to the Minimum Qualifications (MQ) for this position. The MQSQ will be used to evaluate if the applicant possesses the required minimum qualifications.

Written Multiple-Choice Exam (Weight: 100%): Candidates deemed eligible and admitted to the examination process will be administered a written multiple-choice test designed to measure knowledge, skills and/or abilities in job-related areas which may include but not limited to: knowledge of cash handling processes and procedures; math computational ability; supervisory ability; knowledge of basic accounting principles; and customer service/human relations ability.

This is a standardized examination and, therefore, test questions and test answers are not available for public inspection or review.

The examination is administered via computer or in paper format.  Qualified candidates will be notified of the particular format to be used in their test appointment notification.

Candidates must achieve a passing score on the exam listed above in order to be placed on the eligible list/score report.

What else should I know?

Eligible List

A confidential eligible list of applicant names that have passed the civil service examination process will be created, and used for certification purposes only. An examination score report will be established, so applicants can view the ranks, final scores and number of eligible candidates. Applicant information, including names of applicants on the eligible list, shall not be made public unless required by law. However, an eligible list shall be made available for public inspection, upon request, once the eligible list is exhausted or expired and referrals resolved. The eligible list/score report resulting from this civil service examination process is subject to change after adoption (e.g., as a result of appeals), as directed by the Director of Transportation or the Civil Service Commission.

The duration of the eligible list resulting from this examination process will be of 24 months, and may be extended with the approval of the Director of Transportation.
