Role description

Project Name: Cross Connection Control Program                 

Position Description: Under general supervision, the 1478- Utility Services Representative performs responsible and specialized journey-level clerical duties in the Water Quality Division in connection with the Cross Connection Control Program. The Cross Connection Control Program was established to identify and address potential concerns with potable water contamination in the public water system where cross connections exist and backflow may occur. Backflow prevention assemblies are installed where various forms of water system cross connections are present, and regulatory compliance consists of annual testing and review by our Environmental Services and Field Services (ES/FS) groups of where these assemblies are installed. This position is dedicated to the Cross Connection Control Program, and will provide support for activities focused on communication with customers and external entities regarding compliance, account information management, tracking and reporting, and coordinating office operations within the Environmental Services and Field Services groups.

Reporting Location: 1657 Rollins Road, Burlingame, CA 94010

Work Hours: Monday - Friday, 40 hours/week. This position requires working on-site.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Initiate notices to account holders for annual backflow assembly test requirements
  • Interface with customers and testers regarding Cross Connection Control requirements and regulations; monitor and respond to email and voicemail inquiries
  • Initiate correspondence with the Department of Public Health regarding account holder and tester violations and compliance issues
  • Initiate correspondence with the Department of Building Inspection regarding permits to install, remove/replace backflow prevention assemblies.  
  • Maintain and reconcile account holder information and records of outgoing notices
  • Coordinate and compile the sale of backflow prevention tags on a monthly basis; maintain inventory of materials and supplies
  • Research customer contact information and plumbing permit numbers for new installations
  • Use web-based applications to monitor and manage account information/status, and generate reports/presentations
  • Participate in testing of web-based applications, reconcile data, and recommend future enhancements
  • Plan and organize Cross Connection Control Program meetings and prepare agendas/minutes
  • Monitor Cross Connection Control Program incoming email with the ability to prioritize and balance workload
  • Collaborate with 7317 Senior Water Service Inspector, ITS and consultants to enhance Cross Connection Control Program webpage on sfpuc.org, and identify ways for better public outreach and education programs
  • Monitor and distribute incoming mail for Environmental Services and Field Services
  • Update and maintain staff sign in/out sheet and contact list
  • Manage Environmental and Field Services records in SharePoint
  • Class 1478 Utility Services Representative performs other related duties as requried. 

How to qualify

Experience: One (1) year of clerical experience in a customer service, billing or collection department of a utility, bank, department store, Insurance Company or credit agency.
