The San Francisco Department of Public Health’s Maternal, Child & Adolescent Health (MCAH) Epidemiology Unit is accepting applications for one part-time position for up to three years in Class 9910 Public Service Trainee as MCAH Epidemiologist trainee.

The San Francisco Health Network is the City’s only complete system of care and has locations throughout the City, including Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center, Laguna Honda Hospital and Rehabilitation Center, and over 15 primary care health centers.

Role description

Under general supervision of the MCAH Senior Epidemiologist, the MCAH Epidemiologist Trainee performs the following duties:

  • Trains and assists in the development, implementation, and maintenance of systems to track the health status of pregnant people, women and children in San Francisco; collection and analysis of health screening data; preparation of data reports; planning and evaluation design for public health programs to address gaps in access to services for SF mothers, infants, children and families. Training to include HIPAA, Compliance and DPH Code of Conduct to ensure proper handling and management of client information.
  • Learn the elements of on-going surveillance systems for tracking health status and identifying resource need.
  • Learn to coordinate process and impact evaluation for public health programs aiming to improve the health status and access to services for pregnant people, women and children in San Francisco.
  • Train to develop quality improvement processes for data collection and data entry.
  • Train to analyze local monitoring data for trends and disparities.
  • Learn to create graphic displays of analysis results and narratives for presentation (e.g. for SF community health needs assessment, the MCAH annual report and other reports).
  • Gain experience presenting data to DPH managers, Joint Health Commissions, and national conferences of APHA, CDC, CityMatch
  • Participate in committees, work groups and training

The 9910 Epidemioloist Trainee also performs other related duties as assigned/required.

How to qualify

Minimum Qualification (Required)

Current enrollment in or graduate of a graduate/Master's degree program from an accredited college or university.

Applicants must meet the minimum qualification requirement by the final filing date unless otherwise noted.

 

Desirable Qualification: The stated desirable qualifications may be considered at the end of the selection process when candidates are referred for hiring.

  • Interest in maternal and child health topic(s)
  • Interest in improving health equity in San Francisco
  • 4 completed courses in epidemiology, statistics, or data management
  • Experience using statistical software
  • Experience collecting, cleaning, analyzing and/or presenting data
