The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA or “the agency”) connects San Franciscans with their communities to enhance the economy, environment and, ultimately, the quality of life in the city. As an agency within the City and County of San Francisco, the SFMTA is responsible for managing the city’s transportation network. The agency has more than 6,000 employees who are responsible for the management of all ground and some underground transportation in the city. The SFMTA has oversight over public transit, as well as bicycling, paratransit, parking and curb management, street operations, walking, and taxis.

APPOINTMENT TYPE: Temporary Exempt - This position is excluded by the Charter from the competitive Civil Service examination process and shall serve at the discretion of the Appointing Officer. The duration of the appointment shall not exceed 36 months.

Role description
Under general direction, the Junior Engineer performs entry-level Electrical engineering work for the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) Fleet Engineering Section. The Junior Engineer will provide assistance to Project Engineer to gather filed engineering data and to perform mechanical engineering analysis on vehicle procurement projects and other engineering projects for diesel hybrid buses, and trolleys buses. This position will also work on system modifications of vehicles, approval of equal parts, maintenance supports, and materials management. Also perform other transit vehicles duties as assigned.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Works with Consultants and other team members to prepare technical specifications, technical engineering reports and contract documents for vehicle procurement projects or rehabilitation projects.
- Prepares vehicle procurement project cost estimates and overall project budget.
- Assists in preparing engineering documents, including advertisement for bids, instructions to bidders, detailed specifications, and contract bonds; negotiates contracts and contract modifications; and resolves clarifications from vendors and address their requests by issuing addendums.
- Assists in managing of vehicle procurement and other vehicle rehabilitation projects.
- Collects and gathers on-the-field engineering data.
- Provides written and oral responses to a variety of inquiries from other divisions, agencies, contractors, and vendors.
- Analyzes and solves mechanical and vehicle subsystems problems.
- Conducts periodic field visits to maintenance yard to research and document issues.
- Prepares correspondence and minutes.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
How to qualify
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Possession of a baccalaureate degree or graduate degree that is accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) with a major in Electrical Engineering. OR
Possession of a baccalaureate degree or graduate degree from a non-ABET accredited program with a major in Electrical Engineering AND possession of a valid Engineer-in-Training certificate issued by the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES). OR
Possession of a Professional Engineer (PE) license in Electrical Engineering from the California Board of Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors and Geologists. AND
Possession of a valid Driver's License.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
- Knowledge of mechanics of materials, machine design, and manufacturing production.
- Knowledge of vehicle subsystems, including Lighting, Interior Climate Control,
- Wheelchair Loading System, Automatic Passenger Counter System, Surveillance System, Suspension and Axles, Steering, Brakes and Hybrid/Trolley Propulsion System.
