The Mission of the San Francisco Department of Public Health (SFDPH) is to protect and promote the health of all San Franciscans. SFDPH strives to achieve its mission through the work of two main Divisions - the San Francisco Health Network and Population Health. The San Francisco Health Network is the City’s only complete system of care and has locations throughout the City, including Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center, Laguna Honda Hospital and Rehabilitation Center, and over 15 primary care health centers.
These positions are located at either,
- Zuckerberg San Francisco General (ZSFG) Sterile Processing Department
or
- Laguna Honda Hospital, where the work tends to primarily be in the Central Processing and Distribution Department.
The current vacancy available in this position is located at ZSFG.
The eligible list resulting from this recruitment may be utilized to fill future and current vacancies in this class at other locations within the DPH for the duration of the eligible list.
Role description
Under general supervision, performs cleaning and sterilization duties in the Sterile Processing and Distribution Department or ancillary units of a hospital or other medical service facility.
MAJOR, IMPORTANT, AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES
- Disassembles, inspects, prepares and decontaminates instruments, equipment, supplies and materials in the Sterile Processing Department, Central Processing and Distribution Department, clinics, operating room or in other areas of the hospital.
- Wraps, marks, dates, labels, inspects and rotates equipment, repairs and folds surgical linen and other special surgical items; wraps linen packs for sterilization.
- Stocks shelves with items and maintains predetermined inventory levels.
- Operates autoclaves, steam and gas sterilizers and other processing equipment; performing high-level disinfection; conducts spore tests; maintains related records and files; as necessary, arranges for repairs of equipment with 2392 Senior Central Processing and Distribution Technician.
- Dispenses and distributes equipment, supplies and materials from the Central Processing and Distribution Department to patient-care units, clinics and services.
- Maintains clean and orderly work areas in the Central Processing and Distribution Department
- Act as a resource for other staff such as those Sterile Processing Department, Operating Room, etc, regarding identification and assembly of specialty instruments and trays.
How to qualify
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
These minimum qualifications establish the education, training, experience, special skills and/or license(s) which are required for employment in the classification. Please note, additional qualifications (i.e., special conditions) may apply to a particular position and will be stated on the exam/job announcement.
- Possession of a valid Central Service Certificate or a Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician Certificate issued by one of the following:
- 1) International Association of Healthcare Central Service Material Management (IAHCSMM)
- or
- 2) Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution, Inc. (CBSPD)
Applicants must meet the minimum qualification requirement by the final filing date unless otherwise noted.
One-year fulltime employment is equivalent to 2,000 hours (2,000 hours of qualifying work experience is based on a 40-hour work week). Any overtime hours that you work above 40 hours per week are not included in the calculation to determine fulltime employment.

Selection Procedures:

Minimum Qualification Supplemental Questionnaire (MQSQ): Candidates will be required to complete an MQSQ as part of the employment application. This MQSQ is designed to obtain specific information regarding an applicant's experience in relation to the Minimum Qualifications (MQ) for this position. The MQSQ will be used to evaluate if the applicant possesses the required minimum qualifications.
Training and Experience Evaluation: (Weight: 100%):
Candidates that meet the minimum qualifications will be invited to participate in a Training and Experience Evaluation that is designed to measure the knowledge, skills, and abilities in job related areas that have been identified as critical for satisfactory performance in this position.
The link to the training and experience evaluation will be emailed to the address listed on the candidate’s online application. Candidates will be required to respond to the training and experience evaluation in the time frame indicated and must submit the completed questionnaire as directed to have it evaluated. Responses cannot be changed once submitted. Candidates will be evaluated based on their responses. Candidates must achieve a passing score on the training and experience evaluation to continue in the selection process and will be placed on the confidential eligible list in rank order according to their final score.
Additional selection processes may be conducted by the hiring department prior to making final hiring decisions.
Certification
The certification rule for the eligible list resulting from this examination will be the Rule of Ten Scores.
