Role description
Under general supervision, the Diagnostic Medical Sonographer, performs diagnostic imaging and therapeutic procedures in one or more specialties of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (DMS) on all age groups for outpatient, inpatient and emergency/trauma patients.
- Performs diagnostic imaging procedures in one (1) or more specialties of Diagnostic Medical Sonography; selects and operates a variety of diagnostic ultrasound equipment; applies non-ionizing high frequency ultrasonic waves to patients through the use of transducers to produce images of internal organs for diagnostic interpretation by a physician, including obstetrical, gynecological, abdominal evaluations; performs specialized diagnostic and therapeutic procedures such as aspirations, Doppler and vascular work, breast, neonatal, neuro-sonography, carotid and thyroid scans and portable scans.
- Assesses general patient condition, including stability, pain and safety, and as necessary takes action consistent with appropriate standards; monitors medical equipment and promptly adjusts or reports problems; observes and documents patient physical and procedural restraints.
- Documents procedures and events in the patient’s medical record and departmental logs, in accordance with regulatory, hospital and departmental standards; identifies images and documents with patient, technologist, date/time and laterality information. May perform CPR.
- Transports patients using gurneys, wheelchairs and beds; transfers patients to and from the exam table.
- Schedules procedures and patients; transfers paper orders into an electronic order entry system; collates images and paperwork, and submits them for interpretation; receives and assists patients and other customers; answers departmental telephones; may be assigned to coordinate patient flow.
- Sets up sterile and non-sterile trays, and provides instruments, medical devices and supplies as requested.
- Trains medical and technical personnel such as radiology residents and student diagnostic imaging technologists in the science and practice of diagnostic sonography.
- Participates in departmental Quality Improvement efforts.
- Cleans imaging equipment and calibrates as necessary; cleans supplies and procedure rooms; acts as liaison with field service engineer to effect necessary repairs
- Performs other related duties and responsibilites as assigned.
How to qualify
Minimum Qualifications (Required):
Level I:
- License and Certification: Valid certification and registration with the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) in one (1) specialty used at the San Francisco Department of Public Health; AND
- Must obtain a valid certification and registration with the ARDMS in a second specialty used at the San Francisco Department of Public Health within six (6) months of appointment; AND
- Possession of valid Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certificate issued by the American Heart Association.
Level II:
- Experience: One (1) year of experience working as a Diagnostic Medical Sonographer; AND
- License and Certification: Valid certification and registration with the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) in two (2) specialties used at the San Francisco Department of Public Health; AND
- Possession of valid Cardio-pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certificate issued by the American Heart Association.
Level III:
- Experience: Three (3) years of experience working as a Diagnostic Medical Sonographer; AND
- License and Certification: Valid certification and registration with the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) in three (3) or more specialties used at the San Francisco Department of Public Health; AND
- Possession of valid Cardio-pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certificate issued by the American Heart Association.
Substitution: Possession of a valid certificate in Nuchal Translucency Ultrasound or another certificate used at the San Francisco Department of Public Health may substitute for certification and registration in one (1) specialty by the ARDMS
*Note: One year of full-time employment is equivalent to 2000 hours. (2000 hours of qualifying work experience is based on a 40-hour work week.) Any overtime hours that you work above forty (40) hours per week are not included in the calculation to determine full-time employment.

SELECTION PROCEDURES
Minimum Qualification Supplemental Questionnaire (Weight: Qualifying): Applicants will be required to complete a Minimum Qualification Supplemental Questionnaire that will be emailed. Applicants will be required to respond to the MQSQ in the time frame indicated, and submit their answers as directed.
Training and Experience Evaluation/Supplemental Questionnaire (SQ) (Weight: 100%): The SQ will be sent to those qualified candidates who demonstrate to meet the minimum qualifications. Candidates will be required to submit the completed SQ in the time frame indicated and responses on the SQ cannot be changed once submitted. A passing score must be achieved on the SQ in order to be placed/ranked on the Eligible List. Candidates will be placed in rank order according to their final score on the SQ. After the confidential eligible list/score report is adopted, the department may administer additional selection procedures to make a final hiring decision. The SQ is designed to measure knowledge, skills, and/or abilities in job-related areas that have been identified as critical for satisfactory performance in this position. All relevant experience, education and/or training must be included in the application to be reviewed during the scoring process. The department may administer additional position-specific selection procedures to make final hiring decisions.
Eligible List/Score Report: A confidential eligible list of applicant names that have passed the civil service examination process will be created, and used for certification purposes only. An examination score report will be established, so applicants can view the ranks, final scores and number of eligible candidates. Applicant information, including names of applicants on the eligible list, shall not be made public unless required by law. However, an eligible list shall be made available for public inspection, upon request, once the eligible list is exhausted or expired and referrals resolved. Candidate scores on this examination may also be applied to other announcements involving other job titles, when directed by the Human Resources Director.
Upon approval of the Human Resource Director (see Civil Service Rule 111A.26.5), the eligible list resulting from this announcement may be used by other departments that also use this classification or a similar classification. The duration of the eligible list resulting from this examination process will be of six (6) months, and may be extended with the approval of the Human Resources Director.
Certification: The certification rule for the eligible list resulting from this examination will be Rule of three scores. Additional selection processes may be conducted by the hiring department prior to making final hiring decisions. The department may administer additional position-specific selection procedures to make final hiring decisions.
