Role description
Under direct supervision of Principal Network Engineer, the Senior Network Engineer will perform, support and implement the LAN for the Fire Network Redesign Project. The incumbent will provide functional guidance to Seniors Network Engineers and other members of the team; provide functional and technical expertise to formulate computer system scope and objectives; develop and/or modify procedures to solve problems using information systems; prepare detailed documentation for computer operations/programs sequencing; perform multiple software functions; and support hardware platforms. Assignments are in highly technical and business functional areas.
Essential Duties:
- Design, install, configure, and document enterprise-level networks, including devices like CISCO 9XXX Catalyst, 38XX Switches, VPN Appliances, F5 LTM/GTM, and Palo Alto NGFW.
- Implement networks Enterprise-level BGP, and strong understanding of OSI layers. Manage Cisco ISE policies and deploy fabric networks with Cisco DNAC.
- Troubleshoot and maintain Cisco Wi-Fi, ACI Fabric, and F5 Big IP infrastructure.
- Ensure network security, disaster recovery, and performance through policy implementation.
- Validate network specifications, maintain SOP-based documentation.
- Collaborate with teams, mentor staff, and follow standards in solving networking challenges.
- Monitor system performance, execute corrective measures, and participate in on-call rotation. Ability to lift up to 50lbs.
- Incumbent may be required to provide 24-hour on-call support to ensure rapid recovery from software or hardware problems for mission-critical systems and networks.
Job Type:
This Permanent Exempt - Full Time position is excluded by the Charter from the competitive civil service examination process and shall serve at the discretion of the appointment officer. The anticipated duration of this project position is thirty-six (36) months and will not result in an eligible list or permanent civil service hiring.
Nature of Work:
Full-time, usually Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. However, this position will require the incumbent to be available to work in an on-call rotation, after-hours, and to work weekends and holidays whenever necessary to support 24/7 operations.
Work Location:
Incumbent will conduct the majority of work at the Department of Technology, (1 S Van Ness Ave, 2nd floor. San Francisco, CA 94103). However, there may be situations where the incumbent will be required to work at other sites throughout the City of San Francisco as necessary.
If hired, incumbent must be a resident of or relocate to the State of California within 4 weeks as a condition of employment.
This position supports remote work, and the incumbent may be permitted to work a hybrid schedule with their supervisor’s approval, after which they must work at least two days in the office every two weeks.
How to qualify
Education:
An associate degree in computer science or a closely related field from an accredited college or university OR its equivalent in terms of total course credits/units [i.e., at least sixty (60) semester or ninety (90) quarter credits/units with a minimum of twenty (20) semester or thirty (30) quarter credits/units in computer science or a closely-related field].
Experience:
Three (3) years of experience analyzing, installing, configuring, enhancing, and/or maintaining the components of an enterprise network.
License and Certification:
Substitution:
Additional experience as described above may be substituted for the required degree on a year-for-year basis (up to a maximum of two (2) years). One (1) year is equivalent to thirty (30) semester units/ forty-five (45) quarter units with a minimum of 10 semester / 15 quarter units in computer science or a closely related field.
Desirable Qualifications:
- Certification within one of the following: CCNA, CCNP, CCIE
- Expertise with Palo Alto Networks firewall services in multi-vsys environment, including IPSEC VPN, URL filtering.
- Expertise with F5 LTM/GTM, F5 Big IP infrastructure
- Expertise with DNAC, ACI Fabric, Cisco Wi-Fi, 802.1x, Radius, TACACS+, Cisco ISE.
- Proficient in Datacenter architectures, Networking technologies & Routing Protocols (BGP, EIGRP & OSPF), VRFs, VLANs, VRRP, LACP, IPsec VPN, DNS / DHCP, NAT / SNAT, IP Multicast.
- Experience with various tools such as Protocol Analyzer, SNMP, NetFlow, IPAM, SNTC, SolarWinds, Ekahau etc.
- Advanced experience with cloud network deployment and operations (AWS/OCI/Azure).
