What We Do: The Mayor’s Office is seeking a Homelessness Policy Advisor, directly reporting to the Mayor’s Policy Director. The primary responsibility of the Policy Team within the Mayor’s Office is to develop legislative and programmatic policy initiatives for the Mayor. Other functions include guiding implementation of programs, developing initiatives to be included in the City budget, and synthesizing complex governmental issues into clear written and oral communications.
What You’ll Be Doing: The Mayor’s Office is currently seeking candidates for a Homelessness Policy Advisor. Each Advisor within the office has specific topical areas of focus and responsibility, yet responsibilities may extend beyond core topical areas from time to time.
As a Policy Advisor to the Mayor, you will: develop legislative and programmatic initiatives for the Mayor within your core area of focus; engage with a broad array of stakeholders from the public, City departments, and other elected officials and their staff at the local, state, and federal levels; analyze and distill complex governmental issues for easy internal and external communication; monitor departmental and Commission actions; make recommendations to Senior members of the Mayor’s Office and the Mayor; and act as the primary public contact between the Mayor’s Office and external stakeholders on your areas of focus.
Role description
Position Details: The Mayor’s Homelessness Advisor will be charged with helping develop and advance the Mayor’s agenda regarding homelessness. That includes maximizing opportunities for individuals to be offered shelter and housing, improving street conditions, and ending homelessness for those currently experiencing homelessness in San Francisco. This role requires extensive coordination between multiple City departments, and engagement with service providers and members of the community. The role also requires engagement on policy and budgetary priorities on the state and federal levels.
Working Hours: Full-time, 40 hours/week. Additional hours may be required to complete assignments, as needed.
How to qualify
Minimum Qualifications: 3+ years of relevant public policy experience or advanced degree in public policy or related field.
Strong analytical, quantitative, and writing skills; strong interpersonal skills; ability to work well under pressure and with a variety of individuals, including city department staff and Mayor’s Office staff; computer literacy.
Preferred Qualifications: Familiarity with San Francisco and/or local resident.
