About Grants for the Arts (GFTA)
The mission of Grants for the Arts (GFTA) is to promote the diverse and unique communities of San Francisco by supporting the arts through equitable grantmaking. Established through a combination of City and State legislation, GFTA has evolved into an international model of arts funding with annual revenue derived from the hotel tax. Since its inception in 1961, GFTA has distributed nearly $400 million to hundreds of nonprofit arts and culture organizations in San Francisco. GFTA’s investments enhance the City’s attractiveness to visitors and provide employment and enrichment opportunities to residents. This investment helps to make our City a great place to live, work, and visit.
Role description
Under general administrative direction from the City Administrator, the Director of Grants for the Arts is responsible for overseeing the department’s operations, including the granting process. The Director is a high level managerial, administrative and policy-influencing position and is responsible for planning, organizing, and staffing the office for the purpose of accomplishing GFTA’s organizational goals.
Essentials Duties include but are not limited to:
- Plan and execute the department’s grant cycle that results in approximately 250 grants annually, ensuring compliance with City contracting requirements.
- Communicate with internal and external stakeholders to ensure transparency in the GFTA grantmaking process.
- Monitor and administer grant contracts through ensuring compliance with grant requirements, monitoring grantee results, and by working with the finance team to process timely reimbursements.
- Collaborate with City agencies that manage grant programs in the arts to help ensure standardization across the City.
- Develop strategies to improve the grant administration process, including the grant application and contracting process.
- Develop, implement and maintain policies and procedures in order to ensure the effective operation of GFTA.
- Manage a team of 5, communicating job expectations and appraising results.

How to qualify
EDUCATION: Possession of a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university; AND
EXPERIENCE: Five (5) years of high-level program administration experience with three (3) years of experience supervising professional staff.
SUBSTITUTION: Additional experience as described above can substitute for the education requirement on a year-for-year basis.
